Hes in the you tube clips below,,,seeing him reminded me of a story. When my little girl was in Pre school I took her to visit Hugo at his farm. When we got there a little rooster ran up to greet my daughter.it was just staring to feather out,and it was very tame,She picked it up a held it right away.It seemed Hugo gave a chick to another child and they raised it in a bird cage. When it started getting bigger, thay brought it back. Now Hugo sees my daughter loving this rooster,he says you can have it. My little girl says,,,daddy can we bring him home,,Of course I said,,,no......But keen Old Hugo made his sales pitch,,,you better tell daddy to let you take him home,,,the cats will catch him here,,,,well we left with no rooster,,little girl sad, I thought she would forget,,but the next day when I picked her up after preschool, she said daddy we have to go back and see if he is ok....When we pulled in the driveway,,,Hugo said,, I knew you would be back,,I have a crate all ready for you to put him in. We had that Rooster for 14 years, till he died of natural causes about 7 years ago

I watched the film, and it brought to mind the other John Steinbecks Tobacco Road, Where grandma was running around the yard, picking up turnips with a tote sack.Only thing missing from Tobacco Road, was the booze bottles(shown in the video). Also shows they don't know about laundry soap, but the video caused me to ROFLMAO.

That is a good story...

I'll have to remember it next time I tell mom I want another tractor...

"But! Momma! He said if I don't take it home, he's going to crush it!!!" :)

Great story and too funny...
When I was about 9, I got a house cat AND a beef calf that had been abandoned by its mama at birth... from one of MY dad's friends. I'm sure my dad thought, "darn friends anyway!". LOL

Very Nice video's and story Larry! Sounds like Hugo had a simple but very good life not complicated by modern society.

The farmer is like his tractor. We see him as he is and not a spray can paint job. No imperfections are hidden by paint.

See, the thing about being a too-smart-for-the-room jerk on the Internet is that you want to make sure you actually are smart. It was Erskine Caldwell, not Steinbeck, who wrote Tobacco Road. If you'd actually read it, you might know that there is very little to laugh about in it as written, although the movie largely chose to ignore everything about the book except the title, as movies often do.

I don't know Larry, or Hugo either for that matter, but I don't see how it gains anyone anything to be mean-spirited about another man's fond memories. I don't know what's happened in your life to make these recent unpleasant outbursts more common, but I hope it gets resolved for the better. I can think of several things you've posted over the years that people could have torn into and didn't. More, I can think of times that you were just flat wrong about things and when you were called on it, you threw a grade-A fit about it. Good for Larry for ignoring you. Looks to me like everybody should.

So sue me!!!Erskine Caldwell did in fact write the book as he did others ie Gods Little acre. I do have folks that agree with my posts when it comes to my observations on posted matters.
Seeing the beer drinking / whiskey bottles. junk cars dirty clothes, becomes apparent to viewers , and I merely made an observation to them facts. Seems the movie Tobacco road leaped to mind.Posted photos become fair game when displayed as those did.I still contend "THERE IS HUMOR IN EVERY FACET OF LIFE". So you see I can't be blamed for making observations to a funny U Tube look alike!!!!When I looked at the film I in fact did LOFLMAO
What I seen was another Jeeter Lester look alike. Sister Bessy was not in the film but the turnip tote bag was being dragged around was synonymous to the film. Made me wonder why the dirty cloths was acceptable when a bottle of laundry soap is so inexpensive ,compared to whiskey, and beer.
, it's still funny.
You are wrong trying to defend what is so apparent in the video, telling me I am mean spirited, and some of my post are incorrect, without proof. Personally I wouldn't have the brass to show old time farmers(my acquaintances) sitting around drinking up the subsidies if in fact thats where they got the funds and while letting the old farm rot away.I'm of the old saying, WASTE NOT WANT NOT.Seems like the truth hurts when presented in another light.I still think the film is funny though. So to you I say. LIGHTEN UP.
