OT Pink stuff pics

My parts chaser truck quit. Pretty sure it is the timing belt and I started tearing it apart (I already bought the parts before it quit on me so even if that isn't the problem they are getting replaced)The thing that I am wondering about is this pink junk built up inside the timing cover. It is caked around the gears and belt. 2001 Tacoma 3400 engine. The stuff is like bad drywall mud in consistency. Ran out of time tonight and will be back on it in the AM. Just curious if anyone knows what that crud is? Oh and if you have any tips or suggestions to make this project easier I am all ears.
thanks.

Truck have red coolant in it? Looks like residual dried coolant from a hose or thermostat weeping

Nope, green coolant.
Water pump is seeping and will be replaced as well.
I have worked on vehicles since the 70's and have never seen stuff like this.

the water pump is run off of timing belt. replace timing belt kit and water pump. red stuff is dried coolant, 95% sure.

Green coolant is not what your truck came with from the factory, it had either a red or pink, called Toyota Long Life Coolant or Super Long Life Coolant. Thats the leakage from the factory fill coolant.

I have a jug of that color coolant from Toyota in the shed for the Tundra. I bought a new Tacoma in 1997 with that engine. I can't be positive, but I think it had the pink coolant, too. Definately an old seep.

That is dried coolant from the water pump, see it all the time. If the belt jumped, you may as well go ahead and pull the heads, it will have bent valves. Toyota engines are interference engines.

I find it hard to believe that a vehicle touted to be so superior to what our pathetic "Big 3" can produce would have such a NASTY looking problem.

I'm gonna BET you'll never see a photo of that in Toyoda's ads???

Hayseed,I have a 2001tacoma, I had the same problem,Water pump is seeping,I did the complete job last year.U-tube has video"s of the complete job.Rock Auto has all the parts Oem #s match Any questions Email Me Bruce

Thanks Bruce, I already had the parts on hand. I bought them last year. I started putting it back together this evening but the new water pump gasket was torn. Toyota advises against RTV so I am picking up a new gasket tomorrow. I did watch the you tube and read some good info on a Toyota page. The one thing that neither mentioned or just skimmed past was needing to remove the AC compressor and bracket to get to the tensioner bolts. If I was in town I would have invested in some ratcheting wrenches.
