What I got for Christmas-II

(The tractor...just the tractor). Several weeks ago I found this '69 Ford 4000 on Craigslist, located in east Texas about 170 miles away. I passed on it at the time because it was too wide to fit on my trailer and some other prospective buyers were crowding the seller. I called the owner a few days later and learned that the other lookers had the same problem. I asked the seller if he would hold the tractor for a couple of weeks, and surprisingly, he agreed. I then contacted Brian Wilkins, a young man who lists his hauling services on this site, and between the three of us worked out a delivery date--last Monday.

The tractor lives up to my hopes and expectations. It's clean, original, 3600 hours. The rears--rims and tires--are brand new (see mold ridge). Two things I don't like: I'm going to have to carry a step-stool to get on and off the thing, and I'm going to have to replace that contraption of a seat with an 8N pan seat.

This tractor is one of the rare models that has the exclusive Copenhagen headlight port covers.

Don't be so quick to toss the seat. We have the same seat suspension on a '64 5000 that was too far forward in the "ride/float" mode. Just welded an extension bracket on the mount, at the transmission to allow the seat to be moved back an extra 4" and all the users are happy now.

She looks real happy with the seat---and tractor. I'm sure you will be too. Good tractor all around.

That's a nice tractor. 8 speed transmission, remote hydraulics, and Independent PTO. Couldn't ask for more on a brand new tractor.

You can fix the seat angle by moving it back to the rear holes.

Something about that support does not look right. I saved mine when I went to one of those aftermarket seats. I will take a look in a while when I go out to the shop. That sort of seat should fit flat and be very comfortable. The springs were shot in mine is why I went to a different seat. Kept hitting bottom.

Jerry,
The seat is fine, you just need to lift it up and set it forward. I think it just sets up and back so the water will run off. Great tractors, spent hundreds of hours on its twin.

Great looking pair. Now that you have it home, it wouldn't take much to narrow it up if you wanted. I second what others said about the seat. Look at it real close before you replace it.

Blackhole, narrowing the front would be no problem, but as I see it the rear rims would have to be reversed and the tires remounted.

I can't see how this seat can be adjusted or re-configured to fit. I'm 6-0, 280, and when the seat is in its forward position the wheel rubs my belly and my knees are too high to comfortably use the brake/clutch pedals. The rear position is, someone pointed out, just a downtime position to allow rain to run off the seat. This position is much more comfortable insofar as the freedom of my legs to move, but the pitch of the seat makes me slide forward.

This is the same kind of seat I have on my JD 1020, and I never have liked that tractor for that reason. What I'm looking for the ergonometric comfort that my 8N provides.

Am I missing something on this seat?
