Fuel tank liner?

Anyone have any experience with the fuel tank liners? I havery a gas tank that is rusted and am considering the liner kit.

You should try to break up as much of the loose rust as possible first. Be sure to allow the gas to dry out thoroughly and put something like a bunch of nuts and bolts in the tank and roll them around a lot to cut any crusting there might be. Then blow out the tank with compressed air and pour in the liner. I use Red Kote. I've never had to recoat one. If it's diesel you might rinse the tank out with lacquer thinner to cut any oils that might be there.

Red Kote seems to work just fine. I got my gas tank boiled out, whatever that means, then poured in a full can of Red Kote, sloshed it all around and upside down and all around, and poured it out. Let it dry a few days. [ Do not try a second coat of the stuff, one coat will do. You can save the stuff that comes out to coat tool handles, shovel handles, etc., it works very good. ] The stuff makes the gas a red tint for a while, but no problem. As far as as I know, it's good stuff.

I have used Red Kote a number of times with good success. The key is let it dry until the odor is almost gone. This takes days to a week. The only way to get it dry is to have an opening in the bottom of the tank or turn the tank upside down. The solvent vapors are heavier than air. If the opening of the tank is up the vapors just sit in the tank and the coating never really dries. The temperature also has to be warm enough for the solvent to evaporate.

I tried it on my 135 massey tank started leaking again in a week after i got it back. I ended up
buying a new tank for it. That stuff works good enough to get you out of a bind but its not a
permanent fix.

If that tank is on an older tractor, it is probably made of galvanized steel. A chemical cleaning, such as muriatic acid will remove all that rust and crud, leaving the tank bright and shiny inside. You do not need any kind of liner.

I bought my F20 back in 1970 and tank was rusty and pitted . I cleaned it good and used a product back that is like Red Kote and it is still in tank and has not pealed or come loose and that's over 40 years ago.

I've used a sand blaster shooting through a 1/2 inch conduit bend to clean out gas tanks. Block the tank upside down and keep blasting and rotating the pipe until there's no more dust. I picked up a liner product from NAPA that hardens white and have not seen any rusting.

If you use Red kote, you need to use a cleaner like Mec or acetone first. I did one years ago that is still good today.

I have had seven of mine coated with Red Kote. Local radiator shop cleaned and coated them for me. some of them were done 26 years ago and no problems yet. Good stuff.

I have never had good luck with Red Kote. Used it EXACTLY per the instructions - ALWAYS fails.
I switched to Northern and works perfectly every time.
