Looking to replace a worn out 3.5 HP Briggs and Stratton tiller engine with vertical crankshaft. It is an oldie, Montgomery Wards. Local Briggs dealer is swamped with other problems and cannot help. Any suggestions on a good dealer?

Thanks,

Bill.

Surplus Center has a off breed that may work for you, see link.

Don't think you will have much luck doing a direct replacement of your original unless you can find a dealer that kept everything. I have a couple of older snapper walkbehind mowers don't know what the block or cover are like on them and it would be a project. Not one you want to hire a professional shop to tackle and that is why your dealer isn't interested. When you can go buy a new tiller for what the box stores sell them for you can't afford to do much more than basic maintenance when you are paying shop rate. This is really the lament of the older small engine shops.

There are a couple of shops in my area I could recommend but I don't know where you are.

Small engine warehouse in Indiana, Northern Equipment or as the other poster said Surplus Center. You'll need to know the crank dimensions on the old motor as well as the bolt pattern. Alternative would to be watching garage sales and Craigslist for a dead rotary mower that might be a donor but be careful on the cheap mowers when you hit a rock you bend the crank and then they're dead, this would of been a better tactic last fall when folks were getting rid of mowers because they didn't have to do grass

Oh forgot to mention I looked at Northern Tool and all they showed online were for walkbehind mowers. Those will not directly work in your application. All have a blade brake and aluminum flywheels. They are dependent on the blade to do part of the flywheel's job.

Replaced a B&S 5hp tiller motor on my Aerins tiller with a Honda of similar size. Minor changes to mate it up. Works great! Only misgiving is that B&S had a extra counter-rotating pulley for reverse. Direct replacement or repair parts not available, so lost reverse function.

I think any new bs vert in the hp range will work, you have to measure the length of the crank though, there were a dozen or so lengths.

I think we had a tiller like that years ago. Belt drive to the front under a big cast iron cover? I remember my dad cussing that thing.

I would check around some of the smaller mower repair places. They will no doubt have more than one good abandoned push mower with a 3.5 Briggs. Just have to check for shaft length and diameter.

I guess you can get the model/type/code number and get in touch with one of several new engine dealers on the internet. Be sure they understand you need a tiller engine and not a mower engine. (See below)

You can also use a similar size and age engine from a mower or a pressure washer if the crank is the correct length and diameter. You will probably have to swap the old flywheel onto the crankshaft as tillers use a heavier flywheel than most mowers. Mowers use the blade for extra inertia, so the flywheel can be lighter.

Lots of abandoned mowers sitting around free for the taking. Most of them need a flywheel key and $5 worth of parts in the carburetor. Use your cast iron flywheel, bolt it on and go to work in the garden. The engine always outlasts the mower deck.
