Missing SN tag for John Deere M

I have a John Deere M that I'm getting back into working condition. The SN tag is missing the SN. Is there any way to either find out what the SN is, find out the year, narrow down to years or even verify that it's an M vs. say an MI?

go to the JD forum, and search for "serial number tag".

There is no way to find the serial number without a tag. The parts book(available free to download from jdparts.com)and pictures can get the year awfully close. Post some pic's in the jd forum below and we'll see how close we can get.
