Getting ready to reassemble my 450D farmall. Think I read about something that is a copper headgasket spray? At the store now but do not see anything like that. Do I really need anything? If so suggestions? Thanks all Matt

Oregon Tractor Jack is right . From NAPA the can says Copper Spray a gasket High Temp. Good stuff i use it on all head gaskets

when both surfaces are new u dont need any sealer. lots of times the sealer is built right into the gasket. the only thing i have ever used is permatex high tack gasket sealer on head gaskets, along with the other gaskets. it holds the gaskets in place as it gets tacky. and gaskets are easily removed. it is oil and gas resistant also. thats why paint makes no sense to me, as its just a make do thing. as this being a diesel engine i would use the proper stuff.

Unless you are using a pre-coated composite gasket that come with instructions NOT to use extra sealer, the stuff below is GREAT.

A couple of coats of dollar-store spray aluminum paint is the next best thing.

I will second your post. Several people I know use it and swear by it. I have a couple of cans too. Permatex and the NAPA stuff are the same stuff just dif. name on can. Look at the code numbers on the bottom of the can and the only difference is the lot number for retail sale.

I often wondered if it is Indian Head , gasket shellac ? or
Indian, head gasket shellac ?
Bottle has a picture of an Indian head not sure if it specifies for use on head gaskets ?

Aluminum paint is an antiseize so the gasket can be reused. After using aluminum paint on the block and head when removing the head the next time the gasket will not be stuck fast enough to either side to destroy it. I have no idea when people started thinking it was a sealant but it is not a substitute for a gasket glue of some sort.

I have an idea about when the aluminum paint was first used.
In 1957 when Ford upped the compression on the 312 "Interceptor" engine, they came out with a bulletin which said to paint both side of the gasket with aluminum paint, let it dry; then paint both sides again and install.
I've been doing that with head gaskets ever since even though I have no engines with ultra high compression like the "Interceptor" engines.

Well ended up getting a can of copperkote from Auto Zone. I could probably reuse the head gasket that I took off as it is in excellent condition but with this being a diesel engine I feel better putting a new head gasket on it. Both surfaces will be cleaned properly before installation. This is my first diesel rebuild so want to make sure it is going to seal up correctly. with a week of good weather ahead of me I hope to have it in the field breaking it in on the plow early next week.

Thanks all for the input and suggestions!

Matt

I use the permtex stuff on my 3ed rebuild and no problems, like one poster said if its all new maybe not but on a motor that's 30 years old I do.
