Slightly OT:06 Cummins Dodge lift pump

I'm driving my dads CTD now since he went to Assisted living. Its an 06 and only has 40,000 on it so you know its never been driven much. Matter of fact, I put most on it with a few trips. It was his last new major purchase and he barely got to drive it before he got bad. So I try to run it from time to time. In 40k I've put 3 fuel filters on it, so its had four counting the original. One year ago it bogged down on a short highway trip and the light came on. That time, I had just run it nearly empty and put about 10 gal in at a reputable station to finish the trip. I figured it picked up crud or water in the bottom of my tank. Got home changed out filter and cleared the code. Ran fine. Put it away for most of the year since then, maybe 3,000 miles since then. Took a highway trip sunday and she bogged down after about 300 miles. I did just put 15 gals in at home from CLEAN cans I had on hand and a shot of additive. Limped home with what I believe is a another plugged filter. I'm tempted to drop the tank and look inside and put in a new lift pump just to be sure. I see on the net that the lift pump is a small issue with the CTD. Could I be getting condensation? from sitting? Any CTD gurus out there?

It could be crud forming from being used so little. I have heard, but not experienced, that the bio diesel they add to make it 'green' can form a slime/crud that plugs the filters real quick...
Could well be worth dropping the tank and making sure everything is clean.

I'll second this.

Also, they make a biocide to kill the bacteria that crudes the fuel up.

My dad has a 1996 power stroke with only 50000 miles on it and he has the same problem. I keep a spare fuel filter with it at all times. I believe the fuel is growing alge and then it plugs. My old 7720 combine has a strainer at bottom of tank and every fall several times it looses all power and I clean the screen and runs just fine. My neighbors mom has a diesel gator and got to where it would not pull itself and we found the suction screen in tank was plugged. It only get a tank or two ran thru it a year.

Maybe someone else knows for sure, but isn't the FASS kit for the Cummins trucks of a certain Era due to the fact that the distance of the fuel tank from the engine caused the lift pump to not be able to move enough fuel, starving the injection pump causing pump and run ability issues? I was thinking it was maybe the VE pump trucks or maybe the first series of 24 valve trucks. Just thought I'd read that somewhere before.

My '06 Cummins has 233,000 miles on it with all the original pumps. Never had a problem except for clogged fuel filter (once).

Because of high miles, my fuel doesn't have chance to go bad. I would bet you have crud in your tank.

I bought a new Dodge dually in '04. Replaced remote lift pump with in-tank OEM type to forestall any problems. Ran it as a daily driver for several years using standard and bio diesel with no problems, few filter changes. Hasn't been used much in last 3 years and have had to replace fuel filters several times as they develop black, slimy, jello-like coating from sitting despite algicide use. Now has 201k on it, may get ambitious and pull and clean tank. FWIW have used only NAPA Gold filters.

redtom, most likely the filter or "screen" on the pump in the tank is plugged up. Had the same symptoms with mine. If you have a way of lifting the bed it is way easier than dropping the tank in my opinion. Does the code read something like fuel pressure?

Also when you get back up and running only use a Baldwin fuel filter. No other fuel filter has the micron rating needed for the common rail injectors. Including the factory. Cummins recommendation is 3 micron. OEM is 5, Baldwin is 2.

CR injectors are $6k a set plus labor.

You also may not know the the filter housing has a drain on it, and a sensor in it. The owners manual states that when changing the filter to wipe off the water sensor with a soft rag. This might be contributing to your problem.

The lift pump on my 04 went out the day after I put a Juice w/Attitude chip on it....Dodge replaced the pump with an intank pump under a recall...for free. I got a copy of the invoice, $12xx! Been fine since.
