Gas welder setup

I have two gas welding, and cutting outfits. One is a Victor, which is quite old. Seams to work fine. I picked up another welding, and cutting setup, a few years ago. It it's a Craftsman. I noticed when I shut it off today there seams to be heat in the connection to the hoses. I heard of Acetylene traveling back to the tank through the hoses. Can this actually happen? Stan

GOOGLE 'oxy-accetylene torch backfire'.

For your safety, don't fire up torch again 'til you figure out what's going on!

Heat in Oxy/Acetylene is a distinct warning of danger. Acetylene is an unstable gas when over 15PSI. It can, and has. self destructed when confined in a closed space with room to phase change. That is why the use of check valves and anti backfire valves are imperative. The C2H2 compound can explode with no oxygen present. DO not ues the Craftsman set until it has been serviced. Then make sure the output pressure never gets to 15psi. Jim

I have had that happen with a rosebud on my Victor if I let the tip touch the surface. The flame goes up the neck and burns with a loud whistling. First time it happened I didn't know what was going on till I saw the neck discolored. Trick is to never starve the fuel gas.
