OT Block walls again

Thanks for all the replies earlier! I was wondering about the best way to tie a block wall into the material behind it. I did a wood wall last summer and used "dead men" in the wall. How does this work with block?

I'm almost done farming...probably for the year thanks to the lack of rain. Going to turn to projects.

There's a product called Geo Grid. Looks like black plastic caution fence. It pinches between the courses of block. I've used it in tall walls and it does work. Might go by other names too. Usually comes in 4-6 foot width.

you could tie it back with metal rods to a deadman, where the deadman could be heavy timber, old poles,etc---we used this type of system on many waterfront bulkheads we designed

They make special blocks just for retaining walls, have you thought of using them? You probably get enough frost in MI to crack a block wall laid with mortar.

I really don't know if we do or not. It would have to be hydraulic pressure from water behind wall and it is an end wall...no runoff from roof. The side retaining wall I made out of wood took some heavy pressure over the winter and is going to need more reinforcing. Fortunately I caught it before it could collapse and braced it and there is sand behind it so easy to dig down and add support.

I had been thinking of running some steel straight back from the wall into the back fill and pouring some concrete around the far end to create support. Sounds like maybe the same idea. Maybe I will go with that.

I am looking at that stuff also. Anything to strengthen the wall and keep the fill from pushing it over. I hate doing things twice.
