Manual just says to remove it, but I have tried a strap wrench to unscrew it and it doesn't want to budge...hate to break the thing since it is just plastic. Is it just screwed on?

Yep they are threaded on and yep I have broken them. Try two strap wrenches, one to hold, one to turn.

Just looking at the manual pics - one for the 5525 (first page/pics) and one for a 5055s (second page/pics) (which I have), the caps look similar.

If that is the case, on my cap, there are no male/female threads that attach the cap to the tube - but rather a knob that one tightens/loosens.
Under the cap is a fat rubber doughnut. As you tighten/loosen the knob on the cap, it (via threads) squeezes the doughnut - expanding it
outward and into the filler tube ID. Once tight, you cannot turn the cap as it is down on the filler tube. One word of caution, don't make it to
loose as I imagine the doughnut could come completely unscrewed can fall into the tranny. BTW, my 5055d has sight glasses for tranny fluid
level vs a dipstick. The cap is what it is - a cap.

If what I'm describing - try turning the knob vs trying to turning the base of the cap as it sets over the filler tube.

Maybe they're different though.

Good luck,
Bill

Well I went with the big 3/4 drive socket on the end and was able to break it loose..
