Massey Harris 44 only run on starting fluid

I put a carb off a good running 44 and still the same. Runs great on starting fluid but stalls out unless im spraying it in the carb. I put new fuel lines, filter, new carb, carb is adjusted and full of fuel, not sure where to go next??????

Make sure you have a steady stream of fuel getting to the carb then you might have to pull the bowl off and check the float setting.

There should be a drain plug in the bowl of the carb. With the fuel turned on, pull the plug, catch the flow in a clean glass. The flow should start as a full stream, then slow as the bowl empties, but continue as a light stream. If nothing comes out, or the flow slows to a drip, there is a restriction in the line, or the needle is stuck, or clogged. Some have a fine screen in the fitting where the fuel line attaches.

If that checks out, try holding your hand over the inlet of the carb while cranking. (You can disconnect the coil wire so there is no chance of backfire.) There should be very strong suction. If not, there is a serious vacuum leak, or compression problem. More likely a vacuum leak simce it will run on starting fluid. Rare, but possible, the exhaust manifold can burn through to the intake, causing an internal leak.

The 44's like a good choking when you start them.

Like others suggested:

Make sure you have a good stream from carb drain.
Put your hand over the carb inlet when cranking, should suck real hard.

Post back.

Intake to exhaust manifold connection is used to heat the incoming charge. If that connection cracks internally, the engine will suck exhaust into the intake. Looking down the exhaust pipe might see it if they align. Taking the manifold off is one sure way to find it by setting it with the ports facing up, plugging the intake, and filling the intake ports with water. Jim

well first off STOP using starting fluid !!!!!!. you have washed the cylinders dry by using it and now have low compression pull plugs and get some oil in the cylinders about 1/4 cup each leave plugs out and crank over for 2 minns. NOT all at once or you will over heat the starter this will blow some of the oil out of the cylinders replace plugs and just bump the starter and make sure it turns over and it dose not hammer lock if it turns over turn key on and choke and try starting it

But have you check to make sure you have a good flow of gas to the carb. NO gas no run. You can switch out 100 carbs but if you have little or no gas getting to it then it will not run no matter what

I agree Stop using starting fluid. I respectfully disagree about the idea of washing the cylinder walls, it is a fuel gas as it enters the engine differing in combustability, but drier than gasoline vapor. Not a liquid. The lubrication system of the engine is still working, spreading oil around as normal. To flood the engine with oil just wastes it, and makes a mess. He just needs to diagnose the problem and repair it. Jim

You said you have a new fuel filter, did you go with an inline, like the ones the guys at the parts store try to push on everyone? Those are a menace to old tractors and keep them from getting fuel.

Yes there is good gas glow, new tank, filter, hose, streams good to carb and fills up, i hooked vacuum gauge to the port above carb, bounces beween 8 and 15 really fast.....

pull your plugs and do a compression check and I'll bet it is VERY low then add a little oil and recheck. ether is a very dry and if you used a lot and your rings are old and wore out you got nothing for compression only way your cylinders get oil is from the bottom and by just trying to start it very little if any oil gets on the sleeve or piston or rings. in 40 years this has happened more then once in old tractors and ether. you have did just about every test and you have good vacuum so what you got to loses
