5.4 3 valve ford motor

just bought a 2009 F250 with 5.4 3 valve motor I changed the motor oil to MOBIL 1 full synthetic oil 5w20 not sure what was used before Ive been hearing horror stories about cam phasers failing due to poor oil use am I on the right track useing synthetic? truck has 75000 miles thanks for any advise Howard

I don't know about Ford but my Ram Hemi specifically said to use 5w-20 or the 8-4-8 wouldn't work properly and that the oil pump was specifically designed for that light oil. Times have changed. Time we the consuming public come up to speed and abandon old habits......yes it's tough. I'm the world's worst if anybody is.

Yes. Change the oil every 5K are 7.5K if it get driven mostly road miles.

I replace the spark plugs every 30K never had one break are come out hard. If its never had spark plugs replaced its time and a special process needs to be preformed to get them out with out breaking them off, Even then it may be a toss up.

Look after it and it will look after you.

If the cam phasers are working and quiet I would do what you are doing - but I still wouldn't go past 5000 miles on the oil changes - even with synthetic. Synthetic does not run "cleaner" than conventional oils - it just has the ability to suspend more contaminates. If you switch to conventional oil I would change every 3000 miles - especially with 5W20.

A 2009 5.4L 3V would NOT have the 2 piece spark plugs that break!

Last one I had, I ran Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5w-30 with Motorcraft filters. Sold it with 305,000 miles with the original sparkplugs in it. Changed oil every 6-7 thousand and only had to add one quart at 3500 miles.
I guess that is not right, I still own 2 5.4's One in a 2011 Expedition with 15000 miles, and one in a 1998 Navigator with 194000. Never have had any trouble with my 5.4's
If I were you, I would just use the Motorcraft blended oil, and keep it changed every 3500 unless you are running road miles and putting 75000 miles plus on every year.

Couple of comments. First thing, 'full synthetic' in the US is not really a synthetic oil. The base stock is a dino oil, comes right out of the ground, and it's hydro-cracked, and well refined then the additive package is blended. If you want an actual class IV real synthetic POE oil, you need to order it from Europe.

Next, Mobil 1 is not my personal choice of oils. They have caused millions of dollars in damage to aircraft engines with their attempt to market a syn oil to piston aircraft owners. I know, it cost me a $13,000 engine, and Mobil only paid for $2200 of it. Also plenty of info out there on Mobil 1 and viscosity issues on the track. Seems it doesn't like the viscosity modifiers that they started with, but maybe it's gotten better.

Finally, any of the 'synthetic' oils are better than the refined(class II) type oils because they use a better method of filtering, and combining base stocks to improve consistency. Also, you mat get a better additive package with the syn oils that will maintain viscosity over a longer time. I would say if you follow the drain intervals(most people don't) any of the other syn oils will be your best bet. I have a lot of cars, trucks, etc and I've decided on Castrol Syn-tec. Of course, it's not a class IV synthetic either, but it has been my choice for many years, and so far so good.

I use OEM spark plugs how that come out of the box. Its not worth going with another so called improved plug and chase misfires till ell freezes over.
