Valve cover gasket

depends on how bad. I have pulled cover where I thought all cork was coming off with cover, when I pulled it into. have cleaned it oil free & glued back together with gsk maker (silicone] put coat on repaired seam

RTV silicone blue will be fine, after cleaning the break with carb cleaner or electro-motive cleaner. Let it harden before using it. Jim

If you don't want to replace it, probably be better to completely remove it, clean all the oil off, seal it with black automotive RTV silicone.

The only reason to use anything on a gasket is to hold it in place during installation. If you take apart an original engine, you will find that no sealers of any kind were used in the original assembly. There is a reason for this. As previously stated, gaskets were designed to be used dry. The only exceptions that I know of are using a little silicone at joints to seal a gap.
