Just thought I'd say hi, I'm Ryan, in Iowa. I just bought my first tractor a 1960 Ford 801 powermaster with a woods brush cutter for $2500 (2 hour away delivery to my house also included). I hope I did ok on that price, it has a few issues I will try to figure out with the search function here before I post much.

Should I post questions about this tractor in the 8N/9N section or the Ford section?

Issues I've found so far are that it will only run on full choke, the guy said once it warms up it is better. But no better so far. Hopefully just a fuel issue, or rebuild carb.

One rear rim is rusted a bunch, other a little. Still hold air but barely I'm sure. Brand new rim is $200 so not bad, but may try to find a used one.

One front bearing is likley bad, has a whole bunch of slop and grease coming out of it, and wobbles when I shake the wheel.

You're probably not getting enough fuel- Turn off fuel at the tank, then remove sediment bulb. Turn on fuel again, you should be getting a steady stream of fuel out of the tank, not just a drip or dribble. Probable cause is partially plugged at the tank outlet/sediment bulb inlet.

Cannot see the gear shift lever. Is it a 841 that is a 4 speed without live power take off, 851 with 5 speed without the live PTO, 861 5 speed with live PTO or an 871 SOS tractor, hope not the later. Best model is the 861.

BC. Ps /Good luck with your tractor, its a beauty

Welcome to the Forum Ryan. Nice looking tractor. Appears to have been converted to 12 volt with an alternator.
I would say you did good on the price. Questions should be posted in the Ford Forum.

Just a caution. We see lots of horror stories on these sites, so this is the advice; NO children on tractors, ever. There are many tragic stories. NEVER with the engines running, NEVERR with the PTO shafts turning.

Nice! Looks like it has been very well cared for!

The only running on choke does sound like a fuel problem. There is a drain plug in the bottom of the carb. With the fuel valve on, pull the plug, catch what comes out in a clean glass. It should start as a full stream, then slow to a trickle. If it slows to a drip or stops, there is a fuel restriction. Could be at the tank, there may be a screen at the inlet fitting of the carb, could be the float stuck. Those carbs are simple, field serviceable, can usually be eased apart without needing a kit.

Look at what you caught in the glass. If it's dirty, or has water on the bottom, the tank may need to be dumped and carefully rinsed out. At that age, expect some rust, so be gentle or it will be leaking.

The grease on the bearing appears to be coming from the spindle bushings. That's normal, but there should not be excess play. It may need spindle bushings and/or spindles.

A shop manual would be a wise investment. It will more than pay for itself in mistakes not made!

Welcome.Tractor looks good. The mower, from what I see, must be a Woods cadet 72. You will like it when you change blades. Very easy. Stan
