Not sure what I Have

Hello All,
I just purchased a Ford tractor and I'm not 100% sure what model I have. I know it's not an 8N. My tractor has the following:
3 speed transmission
Appears to be blue belly with white top
No Ford script on rear fenders or hood
Grill badge has ford oval with Ferguson System underneath
Axel serial number is 2N
Engine serial number is 9N
Ignition key on left side of steering column

I don't think it's ever been repainted and it's still a 6 volt system. Most everything appears original other than headlights and work light on rear fender. Distributor is front mount. She's hard starting but the motor has great compression and sounds really good. Would this tractor be a 9N or 2N?

Well it has to have been repainted. Fords of the vintage your talking about where all red/white/gray. The blue and white came about in the mid 1960s.

Your tractor could very well just be an orphan made up out of "parts" of other tractors. The 2n/9n had many parts that could be bolted together in many combinations. The value of these tractors hit bottom around the early 1970s. So if there was much wrong with an engine or transmission you could buy a complete engine or transmission cheaper than you could repair what you had. So many of them got mixed and matched.

8N was a 4 speed, 1948-1952. 9N was a 3 speed, 1940s? Don"t know about a 2N, but I think from the 40s. You might have a mutt.

It has been repainted but must have been a good repaint? Could you tell us the serial # so we could know for sure? Definitely seems to be a 2n. My 2n doesn't have
original paint either.

Easy way to tell a 9N from a 2N. On the 9N the hood has hidden fasteners underneeth. You cannot se them except from the bottom. On the 2N the hood is fastened on with a 7/16" bolt in the bottom of the side of the dogleg panels and is easy to see. Unless they have been replaced the wishbone on a 9N will be an I beam, all except the very first 2N will be a tube.

Easy rule of thumb to remember years is: thirty 9 = 9N, fourty 2 = 2N, fourty 8 = 8N. Main difference between 9N and 2N are in
the electrical system. Since the tractor serial is on the engine block, and all flathead engines can be made to fit the serial
doesn't mean much unless the history is known. I was a Ford tractor parts man for years and have seen some strange combo's.
Early 9N with side distributor 8N engine, and an NAA from grille to flywheel and 9N from there back, they'd made pipes from the
bottom of the 9N trans case to feed the live pump on the NAA engine.

go to the left side of your page and click on serial numbers that will take you wher you need to go to find the answer you want.

If engine has been changed that will not do you any good and same engine fits from 39 to 52 but with slight modifications.
