Mower that you stand on?

My boy is looking at a mower that you stand on instead of sitting on. He claims it's better on back. Anyone have one? What's your experience? Boy is not a landscaper, just wants one to mow a small 5000 sq ft yard.

That is a little over 1/10 of an acre. Put a house in the middle of that and you could mow with a push mower in about 15 minutes. Doesn't make any sense.

Find a used furniture store, get an old steel-frame secretary's chair, with the back rest lumbar support, and mount that support on the mower sea. Man what a difference. I did it, and driving my old Farmall H is a pleasure now, and I have back issues from weight-lifting in gym class in 1960.

Can't tell you much about them, I've watched guys mowing with them, on smooth ground seems ok. But on rough ground the guy ridding it looks like he's got the hebby jebbys, might not be as bad going slower. But all I've watched were going like a swarm of bees were after them.

You talking about a zero turn that you stand on, or a walk-behind with a sulky?

I agree though. 5000sqft lawn doesn't even require a riding mower, especially if he's concerned about health. Walking's good for you.

I see mostly the big commercial lawn services use them on big lawns and commercial jobs, but never in a 5000 sq ft residential yard. Seems like they wouldn't be handy to turn and maneuver and get around for just a small yard. I DO THINK THEY ARE GOOD HEAVY COMMERICAL MOWERS

Its his money his yard and his choice. I think they are decent quality mowers if he needs one of them and its best for his yard

Best wishes Neighbor

First they were developed to help the commercial guys that get on and off constantly. Getting a commercial machine for home use is good as they will last awhile BUT you pay for that. And just how big a mower is he looking at? For 5000 sq. ft. is 4 feet wide practical? The smallest I've seen is 3 Foot and standing on the driver looks bigger then the mower. Get a walk behind!

thats not a big yard what does he want to do set a speed record seems like now mowers need to go fast no body has time to mow

In addition I also think they were designed so the commercial guys can haul 2 mowers in the space of one.
I used to see a lot of them when they first came out and now not near as many. Plenty of regular zero turns still.

Must have a better back than I do. I would never be able to take it. There are weeks where I can cut 15 acres if I want to do it all. I could not stand on that thing long enough. Walking would actually help with back issues but it would still have to be self propelled and a wide cut. I have a Lazer ZTR. High end model I bought off the floor on end of season clearance. It has an adjustable cushy seat that is better than anything we have in the house. I'm good with that.

Your son and I must agree. If takes longer than 15 min to mow get bigger mower of concrete yard with green dye.

JohnT,
He already has a 21 inch 2 year old self-propelled walk behind Honda. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. He is buying a new house and wants a stand up mower.

I'm too cheap to buy one. I'm also to cheap to pay what he's paying for a new house.

So far no one has posted a good brand.

Geo.

Bill,
Something wrong with my boy. He is buying a new house and can't even put a pole barn on the property.

I won't mow with anything less than 72 inches except for using a 48 inch mower to do the trim work.

I mow about 2 acres per hour.

I think Yazoo is a good heavy duty commercial type mower and think they make stand behinds if still in business???

My neighbor stored one of those in my shed. I tried it out once-I could not get used to it. Trying just to figure out how all those safety controls worked- once I figured out all the safety controls for starting it. And riding a sulky reminded me of a carnival ride. Not for me.

I've seen them around commercial establishments having mowing accomplished by a contract company. The mower is a heavy duty 2 main drive wheels, with dolly wheels up front to support the mower deck and behind is an attachment with a small platform for the operator's feet. It articulates as the tractor turns. Controls are on the handle bars like most walk behind mowers.

I like sitting down. Different strokes for different folks.

I mow 4 1/2 acres around my house with a commercial grade Ferris 72" Zero turn. My previous mower was a Bobcat Predator Pro that had engine troubles and needed replaced. Before I bought the Ferris I tested out at least a dozen mowers including standups. The best standup I found was a Wright. The standups have a longer learning curve to get used to the hand controls and are very touchy. Quick as all get out but the slightest movevement on your grip and these things are zigging and zagging all over the place. The professional landscapers around here use them because they will out mow a zeroturn hands down and they do a better job than the zero turns mainly because they weight less and are typically narrower.

My neighbor has a 32" Exmark walk behind that he likes for a mowing about a 1/2 acre yard. In short I think that for the size of lawn that your son is mowing maybe one of these larger walk behinds would be a better fit.
