two drain plugs

I changed oil on the little McCormick 4WD today. That little rascal has a split oil pan with a drain plug on either side, each side holds about 3 quarts, then about the same on the top common area. It really confused me, had to crawl under and look up to figure it out. I found this when I drained the oil on opposite side of engine from dipstick, pulled it and the engine still had oil in it.

The old Mercury Grand Marquis had a split oil pan with two plugs. Another case where you wished that the designer(s) had to do oil changes.

I think it is made with a baffle in the center, so if the tractor is at a angle, all the oil doesn't run to the low side, starving the oil pump.

The 478 Hercules in my White 2-135 is the same way. I think I changed oil in that thing twice before I noticed the second plug.

Some 80's vintage Ford pickups and I think Broncos had that as well. Not being a real "died in the wool" Ford man I always thought to myself "a better idea" just like they advertised. ;^)

I have a T4.75 New Holland .... it has the same arrangement... split oil pan.. I was not surprised when I changed the oil for the first time... I read the manual. A agricultural dealership owner .. a friend/acquaintance of mine .. told me many years ago .. "no one reads the manuals..no one".. I guess this post just confirms his observations from many years ago... a rather wise man indeed.

My Branson's are Cummins licensed engines and they have a hump in the middle of the oil casting (not sheet metal pan) for the 4wd shaft to pass which allows for flat floors in the operator station. Drain in each side. Branson paints the drain plugs yellow which helps to spot them the first time.
