Ferguson To30 timing/manifold

this is my first post but I have learned a lot by reading this forum thanks guys.

I have a 52 To30. When I got this tractor it was absolutely shot. So I took it down and cleaned and inspected it. Put it back together and found that my intake manifold is now blowing air rather than having a vacuum. From what I have read, it is most likely a timing issue. I did not pull the crank nor the cam shaft so that timing should be good. I'm wondering if my ignition timing is causing it? I believe I have it right. I timed from tdc. Just wondering if there is anything else it could be.

Thanks

What kind of blowing are you describing?

If it is popping back when trying to start, it could be the ignition timing is wrong (180* out), wired wrong in the distributor cap, carbon tracked cap, or moisture in the cap. Try pulling the coil wire, give it a crank. If the popping stops, there is likely an ignition problem.

Are you familiar with how to get #1 at top center on compression stroke? If not we can explain.

Another problem that can cause blowing back is an exhaust valve not opening, as in a bent pushrod or flat cam, or an intake stuck open or not sealing.

One more cause, not real common, but a restricted exhaust will cause blow back.
