Movable bookshelves

I have nearly a thousand books and I am trying to think of how to make movable shelves for storing them (I obviously haven't a book on building movable shelves). I live in employee housing or in rentals, so it cannot be permanent or damaging to the property. Any ideas?

I too like books and have many. The college kid solution is to purchase 16 decorative concrete blocks 4" thick and 12"X12". Using 4 quarter (i inch thick) X 6" deck planks, two to s shelf, and carpet pads stuck to the blocks to keep them off the walls, they go up quick and all materials are reusable and easy to take down. I guess I wasn't clear. I want books shelves that move. The idea is I have books on a self and more books on another set of shelves in front of that shelf and when I want to access the other shelves I move the shelf or shelves in front.

Purchase machine moving dolly/rollers create the shelving units with 2 sided thinking (so it has books from both sides with spines outward). Make the bottom from two layers of 3/4 7 ply form plywood. Attach the rollers as far apart across the depth as possible. Run the rollers on a steel strip to roll easily and not mar a floor. Pull from the base only to move the units. Jim

Build a back to back unit with fairly heavy duty casters mounted on a fairly rugged frame under the unit, books are heavy when you get enough of them. I say back to back so it will be deep enough to be stable. If you don't make the units too high you can stack two or three, making them easier to move when you move. Look in McMaster Carr or some such industrial supply and try and find casters with enough capacity plus a little, with non marking wheels. Keep in mind they may "flat spot" if parked too long with a load on them, a harder material may not be so bad this way.
