2015 ram pickup there is 2 cast iron weights about the size of a grapefruit attached to the framerail under the passenger and drivers side seats. what purpose do these serve? thanks and happy new year everyone. remember the people that protect us.

Doesn't seem like they could be weights when auto companies are spending tons to make vehicles lighter, is there anything connected to them?

Hmmm seems counterproductive, maybe to dampen a harmonic that is developed in the chassis?

I don't know what they are either. There's one bolted to the frame of the wife's Explorer Sport Trac. The darned thing's in the way of getting the starter off. There's no way to twist that weight around to get it down out of there either. We had to take the torch to it and cut a corner off to get it down out of there.

Them aint weights, theys balls...yur truck has balls :D

(quoted from post at 15:25:56 01/01/17) I'd bet on vibration or noise dampening. I had a Crown Vic with two cylindrical weights on an arm clamped to the exhaust system and my F250 has one.

Yes. That is exactly what they are.

Now days Ford would make them Aluminum. Ha, Ha, Ha. As said below they should not be there at all. Sounds like a last minute fix. Paul

In the world where customers demand silence the manufacturers have to install these dampeners to keep inhibit resonance. Take em off if it bothers you, put them back on if it bothers you.

I expect that it would prevent vibration. I can't imagine a ball of cast iron the size of a grapefruit doing much vibrating.
