Heirloom Seeds

Last year I planted 3 Amish heirloom 1885 or something tomatos. They grew out of control through the cages, tied them to steel fence posts and one still went over 6 foot before it busted off. The tomatos split open, didn't taste like much and I don't want anymore.

If ya want good tomatoes ya gotta pluck the suckers off.

To everyone who plants, grows and eats heirloom varieties, good for you. As for me, I've not had good luck with them at all, especially the tomatoes.
Actually, I've had some of the best results with the $.10/pack seeds. Last year Menards had something like 20 packs for $1 and they were great.

I plant and save seed for around 30 heirloom varieties and have good luck with them. A lot of heirloom tomato seed is indeterimate or vining and can grow up to 10ft, as someone else said you have to pick the suckers and stake them. I also plant a few other types like Sweet Million and one called Scotia, which was developed in Kentville(Research Station) Nova Scotia for colder climates, almost always does good.
Makes me want to get out and start some early seeds.

gab, try the cherokee purple tomato. it is an heirloom variety, the best tasting tomato of any variety i think. it is an indeterminate up to about 6 ft. but not overly bushy. have not tried it but it has been crossed with another heirloom called carbon which supposedly has great taste and traits. called cherokee purple, now available by seeds. bonnie plants may have plants for sale at certain location. i do tend to use the improved variety of vegetables seeds but avoid the exotic type.

Forgot to add, I shoot a good big handful of gypsum granules [calcium sulfate] at them, to help prevent cracking. I also give them on most Sunday-mornings a big spritz of Miracle-Gro tomato stuff foliar spray.

Since the wife puts up about 70 to 80 qtss of sause, soup and salsas each year, it too about 8 years of searching for the right combo of tomatoes that have few seeds, good flavor and produce well
Amish Paste, Hungairian Heart and Opalka have been our choices for the 3 years
The Hungarian Heart we use for sandwich slicers, but using only 5 plants of each, the wife has plenty to can plus give away some 3 to 4 bu.
We save all our seeds, use no fertilizer, and use the 5' border fence that keep out deer, to tie all the indeterminate plants up for air circulation and pest control

Hi, I grew some heirloom tomato seed a few years ago. They were huge but had a lot of big long cracks from the stem bowl. They were real tasty but unsightly. I didn't bother with them again. I like big boy, ultra boy or girl or the beef steak bush. Ed Will Oliver BC
