641 Power Steering

The power steering on my 641 turns fairly easy to the left, but hard to the right. If I turn slowly it isn't as bad. I changed the filter and oil without much change. Any idea's?
Thanks

It could be either seals leaking in the cylinders, or the directional valve in the steering gear.

Hydraulics can be difficult to diagnose, too expensive to guess.

The easiest place to start would be to test the cylinders. You can plug the extend port, then with the engine off, turn the steering to push the cylinder in. If it goes in, the piston seal is leaking. If it holds solid, the seal is good. best to test the cylinder in the mid stroke position where the most wear will be. Repeat the same with the other cylinder.

If the cylinders test good, look into the steering gear. There could be something caught in the directional valve or the valve is bad.

A shop manual covering this would be highly recommended!

Thank you for the information. I'll be checking both the cylinders and steering post after I rebuild the front end. Loader work has been hard on all the steering components. I appreciate your advice. Very helpful.

Is it hard all the way from left to right or from center to right? Does it have 2 cylinders-maybe you could swap them? Is it easy if you jack the front end off the ground? Maybe binding linkage or spindles.Mark

Hey thanks for the ideas Mark. I know the thrust bearing is completely out on the left side. But not sure that would cause it to turn hard only in one direction. It seems the same jacked up as on the ground. But it does have two cylinders, so if it's still the same after I rebuild the front end, I'll defiantly switch the cylinders around to see if it changes sides. Good Idea...
