Good morning and thanks for the reply,

I followed the cable down and it enters the right side, main/ lower body of the engine block. I tried to pull/adjust the knob but it does not move. My new little red belly starts on the first try and runs great...I will leave well enough alone.

It would be helpful if you told us what kind of tractor you're talking about. They're all different. From the words "red belly" I'm thinking maybe an 8N Ford? Some of those had a cable actuated overdrive. Is it a larger knob than the choke button?

That's what I'm thinking--especially after the "red belly" comment.

Besides, there's no room for another button below the choke on a JD MT.

Yes, yes and yes. My two fingers caused the typo "T & Y" I really meant "My."

Yes, I am a new, and proud owner of a Ford 8n tractor. It is red & Gray, and I believe by the partial serial number, rolled off the line in 1950's. It has a 4 speed transmission and the accessible side mounted distributor.

Yes, the knob is twice as big as the choke knob and I did upload a picture with my first post, but I will try it again.

This is a great forum, thank you for all of your help. I do believe it is a knob for a cable actuated overdrive.

Welcome to the forum. Glad we were able to get that part figured out.

You may have noticed there is a specific forum here for the Ford N series tractors. The guys there can help you with specific questions you may have about your tractor.

Down in the Site Comments forum there is a thread titled "Can't upload pictures" which gives detailed instructions on how to upload photos. If you're in Modern view that thread will appear on page 1 of that forum. Also you may need to get permission for that since you're a new member, or else get a few more posts under your belt.

Good luck with your 8N. They're a fun little tractor. I grew up on one and have another one now.
