Drones have many agricultural uses, right? Therefore I figure I can post this question here. My son is an aerospace engineer who is graduating college in May. I would like to get him a graduation gift, a drone, but have no clue. My fear is buying a something that will be obsolete in a year, or something possibly over the top. can anyone recommend the Honda accord of drones? I anticipate he will just be recreationally flying it around.

Whatever one you choose, check on licensing requirements and operational restrictions. You are in for a bit of education, and decisions here. Not jusy buy and scoot.

Last drone I saw. Got to close to an eagles nest. Momma didn't like it. I get the feeling drones are a passing fad.

The common one everyone buys......

The DJI Phantom lime.

I think the Phantom 4 is the current model. The Phantom 3 Advanced or Pro are about equal, they are probably still on sale but are being discontinued - still good machines.

The Phantom 3 Standard has a poorer controller and can't fly very far, and doesn't work with some 'fun' software. I think the 'Standard' might be a poor purchase because of the limits.

Any of the above need a fairly new smart phone or tablet to be the video screen for the controller.

The DJI Mavik is the cool new fun toy. It is more compact, and might be what you are looking for. I have no experience with them, but they seem to get good reviews for a new machine in the 'fun' category.

GoPro tried making a drone a year ago. It didn't work right. They have re released it now, updated. Most reviewers seem to think it is a year behind, and not a very good deal price/performance wise. The Karma I think? You need a GoPro camera to go with it, so it has less features, and costs the same if you need to buy a camera as well.

There are others out there, but they have less support, less parts, less people familiar with them.

I would look at a Mavik, and a Phantom 3 Advanced, and a Phantom 4. See what your price level is, and what features you think are good for him.

I think you'r right Leroy. The day the eagle took this one out.I was in the field filling feeder tanks.Thing buzzed me for about fifteen minutes. Good thing I didn't have a rifle with me.

Here they have been around for surveillance by local law and fed people, I can't say how many people told me I was NUTS when I started telling people about them,, this was 10-12 years ago,, those also have a heck of lot more things on them to watch you with,, today they use Much smaller ones than then you would not believe me if I said how small, first ones here ran from 2-3 feet across then but there was bigger ones as well,, I learned long ago not to post the pics I have of them on-line certain ones Really Do Not like that to be done as they love keeping most folks in the "dumb zone" And if you really think they are going to stop any time soon ,,,,,, sorry I am betting the whole wad on they will not go away anytime soon

My son who is also in aerospace engineering at Royal military collage of Canada. He bought a drone last year, flies it to find our bloodhounds when they go on their adventures, I can t tell you about his but he has some great video of the land and used it to inspect our brick chiminy

My brother has a pretty neat drone (don't know who made it, or the model), but the video he got flying it over our farm is pretty neat to see. I think his drone won't go higher than 400', if you were to loose radio control of it for some reason, it will come back to you.

With anything that technical, I would not make it a surprise gift. Let him pick out which drone he wants as a gift, or give cash towards the drone of his choice.

Years ago the statement would be I want to get my kid the Cadillac of drones . Now we are so japwhipped it is a Honda? Is Honda the new best ever ?

For anyone else that may have misunderstood my Q- no I do NOT want the Cadillac of drones. I want the Honda accord of drones - one that is a great value for the money and starts up every morning when you need it and only needs gas, tires, and brakes! In other words, a good solid middle of the road drone with no stupid features that you will never use.

No, Honda is the reliable, middle of the road, does everything, beater workhorse.

If he wanted the best he would have asked for the Cadillac. By the context of his post he does NOT want the best, but not the worst either. Hence, Honda Accord.

I would pick something middle of the road, price wise, and expect that whatever you get will be obsolete in two years.

I think he would enjoy and tweak it.

Its true the Phantom line seems to be the most popular seller. My nephew has one and it works fine. But my Autel XStar Premium is a "phantom clone" an it does everything a Phantom will. I've had it since December and well satisfied so far. I've probably got $1000 in it including carrying case and the tablet I bought to use with it. Check them out on youtube for reviews. Or check my latest video :) Got some flying views of my old Mercury.
