Alfalfa Establishment and Irregation

Well, i am not in the irrigating world, but I do know wet ground is not very friendly to alfalfa. Standing water, or constantly saturated ground will kill alfalfa out. I think I would be pretty light on the irrigating on freshly sewn alfalfa. Probly just enough for it to sprout and come up and start establishing a root system to start with. Irrigate more as the alfalfa gets more established.

One year while visiting my family in AZ I helped plant a new alfalfa field when were done planting we opened the gates on the irrigation ditch and flooded it with 8" of water, grew like Crazy

Alfalfa needs a lot of water... but on well drained ground. I know, confusing.

If your soil is dry, and no rain coming, get it watered.

A lot depends on your climate!

Bill......it takes about 1-week fer alfalfa seeds to sprout inna 1-qt jar to putt on sandwitches. yum-yum.......Dell

If you are in eastern Washington and you have irrigation you probably have lighter soil. I would soak the seed and keep it damp until it has rooted well. In the part of Idaho I was in on the harvest they water alfalfa about every other day because of their light soil, low humidity and lack of rainfall.

Not in the irrigation area of the country. Now for the rest of the story. I would water it with a good soaking right away. Then check moisture level of dirt each day. Add as needed. Or do as the neighbors do for it. Would be the best in an area.
