NEW EXCAVATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really. I was out in the yard yesterday about 4 pm and I heard trucks going by slowing down and then speeding back up. My curiosity got the best of me so I took the Gator out on the highway and I saw where the Iowa DOT/bluebelley had a 6 axle truck with a Deere excavator pulled over was giving him the once over. I drove by and waved and went about my business out by the pond. About 1/2 hour later my wife and the trucker came out to talk to me. The DOT weighed him and he weighed 103,000 and was over width. He had the permits for state highways but not for county roads. I never heard of such a thing. He said he had to buy permits for the 4 counties he crossed on his way to his destination. He called his boss and it was too late in the day and the DOT guy put him out of service so he asked if he could unhook his trailer in our yard. Of course I said yes so he unhooked and we talked for awhile. The DOT guy said the fine was going to be right at $5000! What a rip-off! I sold my old Bantam 166 and told the trucker if I traded places do you think his boss would notice? The Deere only has 300 hours on it---Tee

$5K for a simple mistake that didn't hurt a soul. Meanwhile, cars and semis are doing 90mph on the interstate and killing people. Gotta hassle the guy just trying to do his job that made the honest effort to be legal. Hope that DOT officer can sleep good knowing he took a "major criminal" off the road. Speeders, murderers, and rapists to catch, nope we just stop forward progress any chance we get. I'm not anti-police, but man they could try harder on their image. I could see it if it looked unsafe, but that looks like good eauipment. How many farm plated grain trucks with two pump brakes passed the cop while he was hassling an honest individual?

If I was that trucker, I think I would take it to court. I believe that oversize/over weight permits are good for the entire state. Including county roads. I've seen rigs bigger than that one go by here on a gravel road, and do some genuine, magical maneuvering to get around the corners. If a county road is the only way to get there, then that is the road they MUST use.

Back when I was still driving truck all the guys kept an eye out for DOT because we knew if they where around they would find something wrong with a truck even if it was brand new and had 50 miles on it. I was always lucky when I got pulled over what they found did not put me out of service just made it a pain in the back sides. Had one tell me my truck had to have seat belts and front brakes and I told him he better double check that and sure enough he had to rip that ticket up because in 1963 trucks did not have seat belts and many did not have front axle brakes

We use large cranes at work a fair amount and they are always permit loads even for a smaller 100 ton crane. The cranes are mostly just heavy and don't travel real fast some of the bigger 2-300 ton ones are wide as well as heavy. In PA they can only travel in daylight and have to follow the specific route given with the permit. They get run around the country side following those permit routes. I guess they figure it's cheaper to run the route than to get caught offroute.

Sorry, but you are mistaken...state permits are only valid on state highways(includes interstates, but not toll roads). Separate permits are
required for county and municipal roads. Most are route specific.

That simple mistake could cost millions. Running 103000 lbs over a underrated bridge could collapse it. That is why they have certain routes to follow. I have seen over weight trucks go a 100 miles out of there way to get to a bridge job.

Hey Dennis, don't you think if you give the Bantam a quick squirt of yellow and black paint, and then load it on the trailer that know one would notice???? You must have a couple of JD decals laying around just to make it look authentic.

In Iowa the over width permits are State issued for state and Federal highways. Then you have to have them for the county and cities separately. When we hauled hay on the step deck trailers we had a stack of permits just to haul in the three counties and towns/cities around us.

If you expect to get paid a decent wage or salary you are expected to know and abide by the rules of whatever it is that you do. That DOT inspector is expected to inspect trucks and to note and address non-compliance with the rules that the state legislature has enacted. Everyone has a boss and job to do.

I bet the key is the same as other Deeres so I would go play! Back when I was working at the dealer, just out of high school I delivered a field finisher and was to bring the trade in back. It was a forest city do all. The darn thing was 17' folded up. Rolled n town and a city cop followed me to the dealership and started to rip my azz! Said I needed an escort...so my smart mouth said why did you not get in front and escort me? I then told him I make $5 an hour go inside and talk to the owner cause I don't give a f..k! He just left.

You are exactly right bout the 103k. My cousin used to have a guy working for him that ran a day cab with a walking floor trailer. They mostly used it to haul trash from a transfer station and demolition ro the landfill. When he was on a demolition job you could tell from the truck, busted wheel studs and suspension parts galore. I think he actually had no clue what things weighed when they were filling the trailer. We were putting a tire on the thing one night and the jack seemed hard to pump, I asked cousin to look in the wagon and see what was in it. He climbed back off the ladder and said I'm running this one to the dump myself it looks like he's full of brick and dirt. Sure as sh@# he calls me the next day and says 112k across the scale and it was all heavy rubble. The driver was looking for a new gig later that week.

I suspect both the driver and his boss knew exactly what county permits were required, but one or the other decided not to get the permits because they figured they would never get caught.

Western Iowa has a lot of old county bridges, many are in poor condition with posted weight limits. The replacement costs start at a quarter million $ on up. Think about how the replacement costs are split: the state pays half (from state income taxes) and the county pays half (from local property taxes)? A few $ for a permit and a designated routing to avoid falling through any old bridges seems worthwhile to save the local taxpayers some unnecessary expenses.

What would be the hourly charge for that excavator like that one with an operator, around $250 per hour? Have fun with your new excavator, you get to play with it for a three day weekend!

Gramps---They are mine. I thought I would have time to restore them--but you know how that goes. They are all for sale---Tee

Loren -I would but if you remember you borrowed my CBS paint booth and never brought it back!!!!---Tee

Typical MORON that doesn't understand why there are regulations like this! Can spot a Trumptard a mile away!

I would have to agree, as someone who hauls oversized quite often myself. We know when we're legal and when we're not, unless he was from outta state, then maybe he didn't know. Here in Pa when you receive a permit it gives the route of travel, which they allow you to choose and they will reroute if there's any restrictions such as low bridges or road construction. I've run many loads without the permits simply because they are a joke and I don't like wasting the time or money to get them. It's simply a couple pieces of paper with the load info and your approved route of travel. I recently permitted a 104k lb oversized load and they had me crossing a bridge posted 36 tons combination weight. I decided to detour around it, only half mile outta my way at most. Which I then could have been fined the full amount since I wasn't on my permitted route. I feel the permits and or fines for not having a permit is simply just a way for the state to collect more money from the working people so they the state lawmakers can fatten they're own paychecks or retirement funds or to blow on some other unnecessary state funded project. . I do feel bad for the trucker though, I'm dreading the day I get hammered that much, I just hope I'm ahead of the system that much till then.

Maybe some of these counties like the one I live in could start using the millions of dollars they waste on "economic developement" to rebuild the infrastructure, i.e. roads and bridges.

I'm a Ford guy but .... Really want an Oliver 77. Got one of those for sale? Shoot me an email thanks. Road trips ain't the worst thing either. Kevin in Central AL

Simple mistake? Don't bet on it. And it may have hurt, as others have said via a bridge collapse damage to a road not designed for that type of weight. Bet most DOT cops sleep very well at night know that THEY DID THIER JOB. They don't get up in the morning and think "gee, I wanna do the DOT thing today and ignore other crime". Thing is these laws that they enforce were passed because people were getting hurt and or killed, bridges and roads torn up without regard because of profit. People still try that kinda thing all the time. So you have cops assigned to traffic, or DOT. If you want more cops going after drug dealers and violent criminals either get the average person to obey traffic laws, truckers to stay within DOT rules freeing those officers up for other duties OR pay more taxes to put on more cops!
