How to repair coulter?

A coulter on my plow has stopped turning, squeaks when it turns a little. It even looks slightly sideways.

How do you repair a coulter? Is there a bearing inside? Is this a replaceable bearing?

Or do I have to replace the whole coulter?

It’s an old Ford, 3 bottom plow. I’m plowing, because it’s CRP land and hasn’t been planted in years.

Thank you,

Dad woulda told me you need to grease them more, they never wear out if you keep them greased.........

Take that bolt out, and it should come out and apart. Should be a bearing, likely two, inside.

It's possible old one would be a bushing, not a bearing. Those need lotta grease..........

A lot of plow counters are 2 tapered bushings that can be tightened to keep them working correct. That is why they need to be greased often. Take it apart and clean it, then keep it greased if it is that type.

The IHC coulters I used to work on were just a cast hub riding in two cast caps, IIRC. Pull out the long double nutted bolt that goes through the assembly, take the disc assembly out of the fork, take off the end caps, clean, grease, and reassemble. Stop tightening the first nut before the hub binds in the caps and put on the second nut.

The "bearing" is probably just a steel sleeve. Take it apart and lube it well. It needs greased every time you use the plow and at least once every 4 hours in use.

Looks like the grease worms got to it,, like others said GREASE it I can see it has not seen a grease gun for years as there is no grease around the shaft I grease coulters twice in 8 hrs or so
cnt

Yeah, it may not have gotten enough grease.

Now the metal/hub is broken/worn away.

Can I get just the hub and have a machine shop put it in with the rivets?

Do you think Case/IH would have that hub?

Or would it be better/cheaper to just get another used coulter?

Thank you!

When I rebuilt my plow I bought ball bearing hubs and new blades from Agra supply, a search for Coulter on the AS web site will bring up several options. The hubs I bought were complete with 3/4 axel bolts for something like $60.00. I also bought 3/4 OD 1/2 ID steel tubing from on-line metals to adapt the bearings down to 1/2 inch bolts. Worked well.
