Engine oil cooler for hydraulic cooler?

Anyone ever have luck using an older gm small block oil cooler in return line for a wood splitter set-up? Return line has a few 3/8 pipe fittings and hose on this oil cooler has 3/8"-1/2" ID oil lines. My wood splitter is home made and I pull it around with my tractor. Splitter has a small oil tank and works fine to dissipate heat yet neighbor suggested I use a oil cooler to reduce oil temp in hotter weather. I tend to try not to use it in hot weather when I can help it. Neighbor even thought using ATF may be better than using hydraulic oil or universal tractor fluid.

If its not getting hot now, then I wouldn't worry about it.

My dad put an small cooler like you are showing on his homemade splitter a few years ago. He seems happy with the modification, but it certainly doesn't split any better than it had been for the previous 20 years or so. In the end, I think it just made him feel better and only costed a few dollars for hose and clamps as he already had the cooler.

Dino oil breaks down around the 250F area. Water boils at 212. If your fittings aren't "sizzling spit" why bother.

Single cylinder engines can vibrate a lot more than most automotive engines and automotive chassis. I would be concerned about that oil cooler cracking and leaking, especially if the cooler is bolted solid instead of on an isolated mounting.

Can you add a temperature gauge to your splitter, or use an infrared thermometer to monitor your oil temperature? In hot weather the people loading and stacking the wood will probably overheat long before the hydraulic oil in the wood splitter. If you can let the people set the pace, you should be fine.

An oil cooler would need a stout guard to protect it. With my luck the fist log that is accidentally dropped on the cooler would punch a hole in it of crack it.

Thank you for all the replys. I accidentally hit new topic instead of reply and made a new topic called Oil Cooler. My tank gets hot to the touch in hot weather yet not so hot your burn yourself. I was not sure if it should be getting that hot. The tank is home made and fellow that built it used a 4-5 gallon cylinderical tank that lays horizontal. I researched a big tank would help disipate heat. I decided based on replies here I won't add an oil cooler. Often while I stack wood I will idle down engine. My thought on that is oil will circulate and cool a bit. We normally put a big umbrella over tank and operator and try to get wood split before noon.
