where to watch eclipse?

I live near south of Clear Lake in Iowa and was planning on taking kids to Des Moines or south a bit the day before the eclipse. The plan was to drive south into Misourri the next day and get into the path of totality to watch, where was dependant on weather forcast in case of rain or cloud cover. Does this sound like a good plan or are their going to be so many people trying to get to same areas that it will be a zoo. I figured on finding aplace in the country on some gravel road to see it then head home.

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas,
Joe

I figure to just stay home and watch what I can see from my own backyard. When I've seen enough, I'll go in the house and take a nap.

Hi, Im in "central Kansas" so I may go north...I-70 area....2 hrs north for me.....but where to go? I don't really like just sitting along a road somewhere...alone...so again,I may stay put! Enjoy where ever you are!

There's gonna be a lot of people, sure, but remember "Hands across America"? They couldn't get enough people to get together hand to hand even when they tried. There's so many small towns and open space in the path of totality,I'm not the least bit concerned about finding a place to watch it.

I will watch from what ever hay field I might be in. The news is saying that over in hopkinsville ky they are expecting hundreds of thousands of people. National news just said they expect they will spend 30 million dollars. AT&T will be setting up portable cell towers for cellular service.

Just a little overboard for about 2 1/2 minutes in my opinion.

Thanks for replies. I am taking the kids kind of a right before school starts science project. Reading in the farmers almanac if you get in the area of total eclipse there can be a lot of vivual and atmospheric changes and abnormalities taking place. Just want to see with my own eyes might not be around for the next time one is close. I mostly hope for a clear day.

believe i'll stay home 23 mi from center line of path, all the camp grounds that have resevations are full, motels full, some a renting out rooms in their houses, gonna be interesting.

Having experienced partial and total eclipses I can tell you much of what you see is much like how things look and act in a dark, cloudy spell. What I think from all the hype on the local news is that one should quarantine himself in a rubber room and have medical personnel standing by. Living is bad for our health. Sorry to stray off topic a bit, be safe and don't look directly into the sun.

If you get as far south as Maryville, Tarkio, Rockport, Missouri (Highway 71 south to Highway 136) you will be in the path of totality.
St. Joseph is near the center of the path and would have the longest totality. Columbia is near the center of the path as well.
I live 20 miles south of there. I think I'll say home that day.

Several people have told me that they are renting individual parking spaces at the mall in Carbondale.

I saw an ad - for $50/head, you can watch it from Bald Knob Cross.

They have scheduled an Amtrak Eclipse Special from Chicago to Carbondale and back.

I'm staying home - traffic is supposed to be horrible.

Would not be surprised to see a run on those items if the right news reports are presented. Also I figure to hear about how to care for our pets during the eclipse.

(quoted from post at 11:04:57 08/13/17) Are the stores all sold out of batteries, drinking water and toilet paper? lol

Went to local Rural King this morning for some oil filters. They were almost out of AAA batteries. The store had pallets of bottled water in the isles. News media is overboard with their coverage of what may and may not work during the eclipse. Maybe power will go out at work and I can go home and work on my tractors.

To keep this tractor related a local show picture.

In Southern Illinois and not real thrilled with the eclipse hype.

Local TV is travelling to a place where there will be a total eclipse and stream it live. So you could see it at home if you don't want to travel.
I would have to travel about 100 miles. Cops are predicting heavy traffic on some roads getting to and from site.

That's funny. We have had many eclipses in the past and will have many more in the future and never heard of any problem cause by them but now days people are not educated as well as they once where

Women, children and the elderly will be the first to suffer.

I did hear a woman on the radio this morning though who said she was staying home with her chickens to see how it effected them.

I'm right at the Kansas/Nebraska border, about half an hour south of Beatrice, Nebraska or an hour north of Manhattan, Kansas.
My area will have about as good of an eclipse as you can get. Matter-of-fact, Bill Nye, the Science Guy is scheduled to be at Beatrice, Nebraska.
But to be honest, I'll probably be at work and I really couldn't care less. I'm not going to take a vacation day to experience it.
It's only going to be a few minutes long, for Pete's sake.

Steve, I saw on the news where MU was renting out unused dorm rooms for 250 a night to travelers.
