RE: Insurance

A nephew of mine was selling insurance for an insurance agency that represents a national carrier. He quit last month. The owner of the agency is slowing down and hired a sister to manage the agency. The sister was urging the agents to do illegal things to get/keep customers!

An agency is as good or bad as it's owners. Really bad for you if you think something is covered when it's not because the agent lied to get your business.

Make sure you are protected guys. We are all on computers here. We are able to look up laws for our states, check out carriers and agencies right from home.

Back when I first got my drivers license, my dad insisted I have liability insurance, long before it was the law.

He fixed me up with his agent, I bought the insurance, stayed with them for years.

Somewhere along the line the agent died, his son took over the business.

I knew his son. Nothing about him was legit, into drinking, drugs, a real mess. But the business continued, we all just assumed it was being handled.

Come to find out, the son was pocketing ALL the money, no policies were in effect. Thank God we didn't have a claim!

I don't know what happened with those that did have claims. The agency closed, the son went to prison for multiple reasons, assuming the insurance scam was one of them.

Good advice, oldtanker.

Another thing is: YOU pay the insurance company yourself... don't write a check out to your agent.

Story similar to Steve@Advance:
Years ago a sweet, smiling little ol' lady did tax prep and sold insurance (life, home or auto). She told people they could write the checks out to her and that she'd pay the premiums to the company each month. But she was pocketing the money instead. My cousin and her husband had "bought" a home insurance policy from her... so if they'd had a claim, they'd have been up a creek without a paddle. They didn't find out about it until after the woman got busted.

We bought a small life insurance policy from her. She had made the same offer to us... but my then young husband wisely said, "No, we'll pay the company directly, ourselves."

Sounds to me like he needs to place a
call to your state's insurance
commission, and let them have a look
at what's going on to prevent issues
like those related so far from
happening to others.

That's strange that you didn't know he was pocketing money. I have been with same insurance since mid 60's and have had several agents over the years. I get letters from insurance company several times a year and if my insurance wasn't being paid I would been getting a letter directly from the insurance.
