thinking about going to a 40 gal. propane heater and doing away with the elect. i have the elect outside so no venting is needed, along with a full 250 gal. propane tank and 6kw propane gen for house and well. any input thanks ps 2.91 a gal in wimberley tx.

If you get your propane cheap, it may save you money over elctric. However you need to figure in your conversion costs as well. Going to have several hundredin trading out heaters. Going to be a lot of water before you see a profit.

Re-heat time on LP is much faster than on electric.
Too bad you're not close to MI, I have a used one for
sale pretty cheap. Changed it out for Natural Gas.

We traded a lp water heater for a
electric heat pump one. After rebates
from electric co. Price about the same.
Runs on almost nothing. Got a new energy
efficient washer, drier, dishwasher, tv,
heat pump furnace and two refrigerators.
Electric bill is cheaper than it was with
lp furnace and water heater. Oh also
electric cook stove. Also changed all
bulbs even in barns. To leds. I know hard
to believe. Last month $90 some. $220
highest last winter.

At first glance, the idea of installing a water heater outdoors is a foreign idea to someone like me from the snow belt, but it does make perfect sense for your location. Heat loss would be lower outside in 95+F temperature outside air compared to inside the house in 78F air conditioned space, plus the heat loss from the water heater does not add to the air conditioning load.

In the snow belt conditions are the opposite: water heaters are installed indoors because inside temperatures are normally much warmer than the outdoor temperature, so the heat loss is lower when installed indoors. Also any heat lost from the water heater helps reduce the heating requirement for the house.
