How to replace pto brake JD2255

I found a JD2255 with bad PTO brake - it wont stop pto from turning. Owner says brush hog blade will continue to turn and takes a while to coast to a stop. How hard is it to replace the PTO brake? I currently have 48 B, so I'm used to that, but I would like to fix it anyway for safety. Will it continue to push the tractor forward if you engage the clutch like my old B does? Thanks, Mike

Which type pto does this 2255 have(hyd ind or continuous)? Hyd ind pto control knob will be located between the gearshift handles. Continuous pto(dual stage clutch) doesn't have a pto brake. IIRC on hyd ind pto with brake tractor must be split to R&R pto brake BUT I failed to locate an ind pto brake assembly for a 2255.

The inertia from the spinning blade is what makes it continue to spin. Brush hog or stalk chopper are hard on the pto brakes. A over running clutch (orc) between the tractor pto and the brush hog will eliminate the spinning blade from pushing the tractor forward.

Well if it has the two stage clutch PTO they did not have a PTO brake. The hydraulic PTO did have one but it would not stop a rotary cutter running at higher speed. It was mainly to keep the PTO from free wheeling when not in use. Neither PTO would allow the cutter to "PUSH" the tractor. Your JD Two banger does not have live or independent PTO that is why it will push the tractor around. TO fix the PTO brake on the hydraulic PTO you have to split the tractor and the brake is a disk in the PTO clutch pack. Truthfully not a repair for a fellow used to working on an OLD two banger. The JD 2255 is ten times more complicated, especially in the hydraulics and center section.

Also the JD 2255 was made as two different tractors, one was a narrow utility and the other was an orchard model. Meaning they both would not be very wide. Do you really need this type of "special" tractor??? Some of the parts would be special to that model. So down the road some thing might be harder to get. The internal parts for the engine and transmission would be the same as the other models but sheet metal and such could be different. You will not find very many used ones for parts either.

The others are correct,, and If you want to change the brake you will need to split the tractor,, and the little brake band is "very" extensive,,and also a waste of time to change, your best bet is to leave it as it is,,or better yet look for a better tractor...
