Still haven't got her to fire; the points are opening before TDC....compression stroke; had a neighbor help me this morning and I have fire when holding wire to plug...have gas in carburetor but still no pop-pop-pop....lol...guess I will get a rope and pull her around the place when I get time. Thanks.

I was taught to trouble shoot. These where the things we looked for : 1- is there spark and is the timing set right, are the spark plugs wires set right on cap and plugs. 2- is there fuel in the cylinders. 3- is there air . If you get it to pop on a cylinder and it fires is the plug dry after or is it wet with fuel. These three things are needed to run an engine all have to be done at the right time right cylinder to make it run. that is what I was taught in trouble shooting an engine. It does not matter what engine it is it still stands as the same rule.

have you rechecked the timing to make sure its dead on? i would say you are not timed correctly.do this... pull out # 1 plug, put finger over hole and get someone to crank slowly when you feel the compression pushing your finger stop there and use a screw driver or something to feel the piston coming up. crank ever so slowly till mag trips. stop cranking the split second mag trips. then look to see if your timing marks are lined up , if not you are not timed correctly. it is nice to know what you have set the points to and also how you set the valves and to what spec.... plays a big part in setting timing correctly. a change in point gap changes timing.
you said you have spark but you need the piston at TDC on compresssion also.
another thing is... have you checked the plugs to see if they are dry or wet?
if dry squirt a few shots of mixed gas, ( 2 cycle oil and gas)in each cyl. give it a crank and it definitly will fire and run for 4-5 seconds if your timing is correct.
pulling it without 100 percent sure things are in order in kind of a waste , as these tractor start very easy with slow hand cranking speed.

ok...yes it is compression stroke....new plugs....plugs are dry....I will check the "trip" and the timing mark/points. I set the points at .013 at top of cam.... valves are correctly set.....i shot gas in carb and pulled choke- should pick it up. Thanks!

I troubleshoot also. Can?t stand it when guys start throwing parts at a problem.

Points should NOT open before TDC, the should open at or a couple degrees after TDC. If you have spark and fuel in the cylinder and they open before TDC you are going to find out about crank kickback and why everyone is very careful to avoid it. Vehicles with electric start and distributors have timing set before TDC, stuff with hand crank start and magnetos AFTER TDC.

does it still have the primer cups? If so fill them and let drain then close them. Should pop right off with timing correct.

there are 2 one eighth inch pipe thread holes in the top of the head that lead into the intake ports, there is usually about 6 inch long pipes coming up from them through the top of the valve cover with the primer cups on top of them. If they are not there there should be 2 small pipe plugs in the holes. If not you have 2 large vacuum leaks that are going to make it hard to start and run like crap at idle.
