Thanks Hobo NC for yours and everyone elses help. Napa did have the correct srarter. However, the first one they gave me was defective out of the box. Got the new
one today and it works great. On a side note, the same rebuilder builds for both chains. Merry Christmas to all. don

You are right on par with my 50% luck with rebuilt starters. Glad you got it going without having to go any farther.

A small shop here (3 employees) rebuilds but charges about twice the price of an Auto Zone rebuilt. Everyone including myself have never been disappointed with his service or price.

"However, the first one they gave me was defective out of the box."

This seems to be the norm with replacement parts, especially electrical maintenance parts. Several months ago, I replaced both the starter and battery on a Jeep that I own. The alternator that I put in was new, not rebuilt. About a month later on a Saturday afternoon, my kid called me and said that the alternator light had come on. He was three hours away. He managed to find an open Firestone store where they replaced the alternator with one from a NAPA store and got him on his way. This one seems to be doing okay.

There used to be a couple of places here in Memphis that rebuilt staters and generators on a large scale for the parts stores. Then they began sending cores to China, now you get brand new from China.
I use a local mom and pop rebuilder where the owner calls me by name when I come in. I don't even compare his price to Auto Zone. I don't care if he is twice the price.
There has been a couple of times over the years when his work "went bad". I took the part back to him, he tested it while I waited. Nothing wrong with his work. He then politely and kindly told me how to troubleshoot my problem.
Now that I think of it, several years ago, we had a family attending our church while their son had to be at St. Jude several weeks taking cancer treatments. The alternator went out on their old mini van. I got their battery charged up, sent them over to Tim at Mid South Generator and Starter. He changed out their alternator and would not take a penny.

When Auto Zone came to town I had an old S 10 pickup that I didn't want to put Genuine GM money in, starter needed an armature so put in one from the Zone that was junk, second one was ok but sucks to do it twice. Then had to install two fuel pumps to get a good one and they ain't easy to install on a truck like that. That's enough of the Zone for me.
