Thanks to all the advice. Changed cap rotor plugs and pick-up coil in the distributor. The pick-up coil was what let it start running again, but the cap and rotor were in pretty bad condition. Spark plugs didn't look too bad, but the gap was a little wide from wear.

Really good spark from the coil but not at the plug wire so I thought I would be going again with just the cap and rotor. When I tried it before replacing the sensor in the distributor it was acting like it was backfiring through the intake while cranking. After replacing it the truck fired right up.

FWIW, sensor in distributor of that Vortec is the CAMSHAFT position sensor.

CRANKSHAFT position sensor in timing chain cover provides timing information for the 'puter to fire plugs and injectors, sensor in distributor tells computer that it's time to start the firing order over and fire #1 (rather than #6).

Without that info, it's similar to having an old tractor distributor stabbed in one crankshaft revolution "off".

That makes perfect sense. After putting it together for the first time I wondered if I somehow managed to get the rotor off half way. Replaced the cam senser and fired up right away. I wonder if the fact that the distributor cap and rotor got so bad didn't damage the cam sensor with random voltage.
