altinater troubles on 1993 ford 555D backhoe

My altinator quit working. changed it out and will only charge when the lights are all turned on. The tach only works when it is idled up high and the altinator kicks in. otherwise dummy light stays on and tach doesn't work. HELP!!

With the ignition on, engine off, does the charge indicator light come on?

Chances are it is not, and it needs to work in order for the alternator to excite and start charging.

The charge indicator lamp should be fed hot from the ignition switch on one side of the lamp, then the other
side goes to the alternator.

I would start by disconnecting the battery, pulling the instrument panel out, looking the wiring over.
Sounds like there may be more than one problem, as in a mouse chewed harness, bad ground on the instrument
panel, corroded harness connector, melted or crushed harness.

Does your unit have an internal regulator?

My 655A has the Motorola type alternator with external regulator. The regulator is mounted, of all places, in the battery box! When I bought this machine the local auto/electrical shop checked out the components, and pronounced the regulator OK, which surprised me, because it looked kind of beat up. A new alternator fixed it, and it has worked many years since.

I checked the wires and ground behind the instrument panel and found nothing. I also checked the wires from the starter to the altinater and found nothing wrong. The indicator light comes on when the key is on. when the tractor is idled up the light will flicker and the tach will work for a second. Then back to not charging. Does anyone have a diagram for the wiring? or anymore ideas?

Not sure what years, but along in that range some of the Fords had a temperature sensor under the battery that shut back charging if battery got too warm. If that sensor ia bad or the alternator does not have the right regulator in it they get pretty goofy.

It is a 1993 and does that sensor wire go straight to the altinater? Would that burn something up in the altinater if left hooked up?

attery temperature sensor is just a temperature dependent resistor connected from battery to alternator & is always connected (not switched) on Lucas systems.

I really want to say thanks. We traced the sensor wire and the plug on it was broke. I wired them together and everything works as it should. I would never have guessed something like that. Thanks :D
