Sheppard Diesel in auction

Years ago Ashland Ohio had a tractor show that featured Sheppards. Several showed up. Before that I had not heard of them either.

years ago there was a John Deere B with a Sheppard Diesel in it at the Grand Meadow Heritage Festival in SW Cherokee county Ia. I have no idea where it came from, but it was a very nicely done conversion.

I saw one of each of the SD-2,3, and 4 at a show in Forest City, IA over the summer. I don't know too much of their history but I think they are interesting. If I ever got the chance to buy one I would probably try.

Sheppard Diesels made in Hanover, PA. R.H. Sheppard Company still in business in Hanover, PA with 900 employees. Making truck power steering equipment. Maybe more interest in Sheppard Diesels here due to the proximity to Hanover.
Aumann auction (about 120 tractors)at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center (Lebanon, PA); in conjunction with the Lebanon Valley indoor tractor classic expo (a very nice indoor tractor show). Only about a 20 mile drive for me.

There were three at the Pinckneyville show in Aug of 17.

Starting in 1949 Sheppard built a 1,2,and 3 cylinder tractor. Not many 1 cyls. built, the SD-2,and SD-3 had Sheppard Engines with Detroit Timken drives. They also, built the 6M conversion,a 3 cylinder engine for Farmall M's. In the mid 50's,they built the SD-4,their own engine and drives. Sheppards weren't big sellers for several reasons. They weren't cheap, and no dealer floor plan. All tractors had to be paid before they left Hanover. Also, they just weren't powerful.None ever Nebraska tested. They supposedly sent a SD-4 to Nebraske, but withdrew it from the testing because it wouldn't make the hp,they wanted to advertise.
Sheppards had 22.to 1 compression ratio with squirt gun injection pressures,we now know that's not how to make hp in diesels. Their main claim was they were the first direct start diesel tractor.

If I remember correctly they started out making engines for ships. Several years ago New Haven, In. featured Sheppard and they had every model ever built and the Shepard Co. was involved in that show. They also had a Shepard earthmover there. Several Sheppard powered generators and if I remember correctly a plow with Sheppard name cast in .

Sheppard built gensets, industrial engines, boat engines, etc. The SD-6 home made tractor has one of their industrial 6 cylinders in it. They also built some farm equipment,as they had their own foundry, but a lot of it was rebadged, built for them. Back in the old days, their delivery semi, which ran cross country had a Sheppard Diesel in it. The founder Richard Sheppard, also had a car with a Sheppard Diesel in it,I believe it was a Desoto, iirc.
