Plastic replacement tractor parts

The recent thread about 3D printed replacement parts prompted me to post what I have made. The original cracked hood badge is on the left. I tried to fix it up enough to use, but it still looked like crap. Decided to make a replica as shown on the right. This is machined from a piece of cast acrylic plate.

Don't worry. 5 of them are through the second machining operation this morning. 2 of those have your name on them.

The easy part is making the emblem. Getting the hood straightened out for it to fit right is going to be harder. I've almost talking myself into making a die set to reform the lip around the opening.

I know what you mean. I ended up using the die grinder to make the battered hole right on the gasser. Hopefully the one on the diesel isn't as distorted.

Machined from a piece of acrylic plate ...... any more details as to what you do? Any photos? I'd be clueless as to what you
are referring to. Beautiful work for sure.

These start out as a 3.75 by 3.75 by .75 thick block of acrylic plastic. I drill and tap a couple holes half way through and bolt it to a block of aluminum that I hold in the vise on the CNC mill. Then the mill carves the body profiles and it ends up like this after that is done.

Then I flip the part over and grip in the vise and run the second operation where it carves out the backside profiles. After that it looks like this.

The next step involves filling the engraved areas with black and red paint, then spraying the entire back with silver paint. After that the front is wet-sanded to 800 grit then polished until clear.

Cool. I've done some plastic CNC milling over the years and it's a pretty neat process.

You can do some neat things with clear plastic, but I prefer aluminum much more. Some of the plastic shavings get through the screens on the chip tray down into the coolant. Then they float over to the coolant pump and clog it up. Any metal chips that get past the screens just sink.
