Sorting through some stuff trying to organize this cluster I call on "office". Found this pic from a few years ago. Bought this tractor 15 years ago for 200.00 Motor was in pieces and junk. tires were junk. Found a set of tires at auction for 20.00 and stuffed an overhauled 88 motor in it that I had and were off farming. Don't get used much anymore because I like the 1550 better for most things but it is a nice tractor to plow with.

One of these days one of those old Checkerboards is gonna find its way home with me. I remember the dealer bringing one out here and demonstrating it in 1961. I steered it sitting on Dad and Uncle Claude's laps.

We had one that had a newer engine put in it. All I remember is the steering was so sloppy you could hardly chop silage with it....and the brakes were terrible....sure sounded nice, tho.

Do you call it that because of the squares in the grill? Those are some of my favorite Olivers. I had been thinking of adding a smaller IH work tractor to my stable...like a 986 maybe. Those Olivers with the squares in the grills keep distracting me though.

No,it's because of the decal on the side of the hood. It had a chrome checkerboard pattern in it. It was only used for a few years on the 500,1800 and 1900. When White bought out Cockshutt they used the Cockshutt spear on the side of the hood and put the Oliver decal on the spear instead of directly on the hood side.

I had an 1800B for awhile, the worst thing about it was the steering, otherwise I really liked it. Mine was a Waukesha diesel which most say wasn't a desirable engine, but it ran good and had a nice sound under load to me. Decent on fuel and I always liked the way those old Ollies look.

Yup...I see it. I sure like the styling on those. I would want a loader on it. Don't know how much it would lift but if it could handle a grapple to load bales that would be a positive.

I bought one, liked it. Good brakes, took me a while trying to figure out that i could not use a single acting remote cylinder. The engine sucked oil- would use a gallon in the morning baling hay and another gallon baling hay in the afternoon. I could not find anyone that wanted to overhaul it so it got traded off.
