how old were you when you started driving to school? few times at 14, a lot at 15, all the time at 16, back in the 60's

Just like you , when Dad needed me home early ,he would let me drive at 14, then a lot at 15 and almost ever day at 16. 1958,59,and 60

17 years of age. I had a 57 Chevy 2dr ht. 327 4speed . Drove that all way through high school.
Wish I still had it. Wish I was that age again too. LOL.....

Started driving Dad's tractors at 9 or 10. Bought my first Harley at 14, first car at 15, on the road starting at 16.

I never had a car until I went away to school, we always rode the bus. I started driving tractors and trucks on the road at 14.

Had to wait until I was 16-then seemed to always "miss the yellow bus" so drove every day. 56 Ford Crown Victoria---Tee

Got my drivers license when I turned 16 in March 1968,got my school bus drivers license in May drove a regular school bus route for the next 2 years as a student bus driver. We had a
1947 Jeep pickup I started driving on the road as farm use when I was 12.My car back then was a Triumph TR3 I bought from a neighbor mechanic the Summer after I turned 16 for $300.
I was living the good life.

Finished drivers ed at 14, but had to wait almost three weeks to get my farm permit on my 15th birthday. My first car was a 67 Pontiac Catalina that had over 300,000 miles on it.

Well I actually took drivers ed at school when I was 15. I got caught driving to drivers ed & the instructor told me if he caught me driving again he would fail me & make me wait to retake the class until next year. So I started riding my motorcycle to drivers ed. I hide it at a friends house a couple blocks down the street from school. The day I turned 16 I hauled my motorcycle in the back of dads pickup to the courthouse to take my drivers test. I passed my auto license test then unloaded my motorcycle & passed that test. I went in the courthouse & got my auto & motorcycle drivers license the same day. I remember Dad telling me when I left that morning that when I got done to hurry home & no messing around because hay would be ready to bale when I got home.

I drove to school a few times at 15, but that was a good ways, driving in town, too much chance of getting caught.

But I was driving the back roads at probably 10 on a moped, in a car, truck by 13-14.

Took drivers ed at 15, had to wait till 16 to get a license. I was supposed to have someone drive me to the DMV to take the test, but I drove myself, got there before they opened.

That was on my birthday. Free at last!

The school that I went to would not let you drive to school unless you had permission from parents and had a drivers license. This back in the early 60's.

school permit at 14; i drove everyday because i played sports and they were after school and the bus was long gone when they got done!
1960 rambler station wagon was my first ride.

15 1/2. Got license the day I turned 16. My dad grew up on a farm, me in the suburbs. I was was allowed to drive the truck with my my dad in the sub at 14.

16 with a drivers license. By 1970 Iowa did not allow any unsupervised driving with just a learners permit.

In Texas we got our learners permit at 13 for driver's education.

Took both written and driving test after 14th birthday.

Started driving to school at 14 as a Freshmen.

I took drivers ed when I was 15. I sat in the back seat pretty much the whole time. This was during the winter, and the only time that the instructor, who was one of our teachers, let me drive was when it was snowing and everybody else sat in the back seat, LOL.

Got my farmers permit at 15 and drove every day after that. Dad bought each of us a car, paid the insurance, and gas, when we got our permit on the condition that we milk the cows before school. Was a good deal I thought.

Got my license in 1964- birthday on Sunday, driver licensing closed on Monday, had to wait until Tuesday to take the test. Thought the delay was going to kill me! First car was a 1936 Chev pickup, would do 38 MPH before the valves floated. Drove to school when I needed to, rode the bus a lot, too. First "good" car was a '57 Pontiac 2 door hardtop, a year later.

a couple days after 16 as my birthday is always a holiday.

my dad says he borrowed my uncles truck and drove himself to get his license. he had been driving before that. this was the mid-1950s.

he was driving commercial milk truck (cans) for another uncle when he was 16-17.

James, I can't remember a learner permit at 13 and a license at 14. I remember a so called hardship case would allow a 15 yr. old to get a license. Not saying it wasn't true.....I have a great memory, it's just short.

I could have rode to school at 14 if they had a place for us to park but they didn't have places. JR High by the way. Then when I was 15 we moved to MISSISSIPPI and I got my license for motorcycle at 15 and rode to school. When I turned 16 I got a license for car and drove to school from then on.
First motorcycle was a Honda 50, 2nd was a Honda 90 and I totaled a 1965 Chevy Bel-air with it. First car was a 1962 Plymouth Valiant with the slant 6 and 3 upside down 3 speed on the floor

December of my Freshman year when I turned 14 and got a school permit. My sister was the designated driver up to then.

BTW, we lived a mile and a half from our local grain elevator, and I'd been hauling grain with a farm truck when I was 12. If any law officers paid any attention, they looked the other way.

I turned 14 in November, but waited to get restricted license until school was out in May. My dad bought my first car that fall. It was a 64? Plymouth Belevdere. A farmer traded it in on a new pickup, he had been usiing it for a pickup, LOL.

Old, here in NH they didn't require motorcycle licenses until 1970. I was grandfathered. If I remember correctly all you had to do was ask for MC during the year before they required it and enacted the testing. what year were you fifteen? I know that you are one of the younger guys here.

In Missouri you had to be 16,first ticket for under age driving was at 14. I bought a 1953 WD and drove it from the 7th grade to 11th.

Drove to school the last day of my senior year in my dad's pickup. First and last time, I was 17. I drove dad's pickup a lot of places but with the bus going by our house dad wasn't going to have his pickup tied up at school all day. I was taking flying lessons which was way more important to me at that time than a vehicle of my own.

Where I went to High School there wasn't enough room to park except for teachers. So kinda had 2 options park block or so from school or ride the bus so most every one rode the bus.

Mom made me wait until 16 to get my license, just after my Sophomore year. First car-1972 Toyota LandCruiser FJ40.

Between seventh and eighth grades, Dad took me to the farmers from church who needed help in the berry patches. The Grandpa actually looked at my teeth before he would say okay! Had to ride my bike 3.5 miles to get there by 0530 (flat ground, not uphill both ways).

First job of the day was to warm up the GMC 6500 tandem and drive it out to the proper field we would be picking from that day. Five speed and split rear end with air brakes. Take my bike along, ride a mile or two back to the barn, bring out a pickup or forklift as needed. Dad said what Mom didn't know wouldn't hurt her. It didn't.

Took drivers ed in the summer, first group of the day, and would drive to school, park a block away, do my driving and then drive home. Instructor figured it out right quick, but then it was in '70, and people weren't so uptight then.

Rode my motorcycle most days at 14. Never took driver ed, been driving grain trucks since I was 14. I already knew how to shift gears and steer around corners, so no need for it.
