70 John Deere

Question guys, I have a 70 John Deere gas, great old tractor. Most I have seen have the single shift lever, with two columns of gears.
The one I have is like the older A, B, tractors, with two shift levers. The main one goes in slots with for example gears 1-3, then to get to gear 3 you pull over the second shift lever. Anyone know the history on this? The late model letter John Deeres had the single shift levers. Just curious.

Thanks.

The newer A's and B's went with the single shift lever, as did the 50's and 60's which replaced them.
The G stayed with the two shift levers. Likewise the 70, which replaced it stayed with the two levers. Why, I have no idea. But that's the way Deere did it.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]TRANSMISSION CASE COVER, GEAR SHIFT, AND TOOL BOX[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the overdrive shifter handle (Key 5).

The overdrive shifter handle was installed on all Model 70 tractors.

Reviewed the [b:654c4848f0]OPERATOR'S MANUAL OM-R2033R JOHN DEERE TRACTOR MODEL 70 SERIES[/b:654c4848f0] under the [b:654c4848f0]CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS[/b:654c4848f0] section under the [b:654c4848f0]GEAR SHIFT LEVERS[/b:654c4848f0] topic on page 12.

Take a look at the illustration below.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, any idea when they switched the shift patterns? Does this older style have the slower creeper gear?

The single lever shifter simply combines the functions of the earlier two-lever system into one lever, the one lever system basically has two "stations" and moving the single shift left from the left station to the right station makes the "high-low" shift without the need for a separate lever to do it.
