North Vancouver Island Road Trip - Old Iron

My 13 year old daughter is part of a dance performance that takes their show out to some small communities on the island which wouldn't normally be exposed to some of this "culture". I think it's as much about exposing the girls to small towns and industrial life....

Anyway we are in a logging / fishing town called Port McNeal. We are heading over to a small island tonight called Alert Bay. My son and I have lots of time to kill so we've been fishing off the dock and going for walks.

We came across some old logging trucks. I believe both are Kenworth's. The big off road one has water tanks at back set up with valves to cool the brake drums on the long descents out of the mountains.

I'll get a picture of a steam donkey in a bit.
There's one one display down bybthe water.

Here is an old Steam Donkey.
Basically a stationary steam engine on skids they would set up and use it to pull cables and "yard" the logs up to a centra area to load on the rail cars or trucks.

Hi CBBC

I come from Australia and travelled up tp Port McNeal lots of years ago to visit a friend who was working there. My wife and I saw the burl it did not have the shelter over it then. Went whale watching on the inside passage and saw killer wales which was awesome. I lost a John Deere cap over the side of the boat and when they told me how deep the water was thought won't be getting that back. I couldn't believe how much timber was grown around BC. We drove everywhere and being on the other side of the road was an experience for me, also went across to Tofino. The Canadian people were so friendly and easy going. Great memories thanks for sharing Matt.

Down near Frosburg, MD I know where a Caterpillar donkey was in a big shed. Couple of huge winches and a big old diesel power unit. Would make one very big truck load. I wish that I could collect everything!

Hey Matt,
It is a long way up here... and yes it's pretty impressive. I forget that the big conifer trees are not as common everywhere as here.
Forestry is still big on the west coast. Even in Nanaimo / Ladysmith is fairly dependant on the forest industry. I know many people directly involved in logging or reforestation ...

On the way over to Tofino there is a City called Port Albernie. You would have driven through it. I found an old truck / equipment museum run by old volunteers slowly restoring stuff. It was fantastic. I'll need to make a trip back there and get more pictures.

Where are you from in Aus? I traveled your country 25 years ago in a bus staying st backpackers and hostels.... didn't make it to Perth though. Got stuck in a flood between Cains and Mt Isa for a week. Bus got in between rising rivers and we were stuck at little crossroad town with a bar, 10 houses and 2000 acres of flooded sugar cane. Had to airlift in food and take a pregnant lady out.... it was a great trip for a 22 year old.

All the best. Grant

Hey Grant

I am in Central Western New South Wales. It is near the middle of the state. It is a long way from Cairns and Mt Isa which are a long way north of here. Been up to Port Douglas on holidays and toured sugar mill at Mosman and a cane farm. Great to get up there in winter and get out of the frost. I can remember seeing some people doing something with antique tractors on the way to or back from Tofino. May have been at Port Albernie. Also still got photos of a Farmall M for hire beside the road east of Galgary. I found this really interesting as father in law had just given me a farmall H to restore. We don't have many row crop tractors here as mainly small grains. You have probably seen more of Australia than I have, it is a very diverse land. Really liked the lakes and forests of Canada. Take care. Matt

In early 1961 my rich uncle sent me on a boat ride to Australia, something about the annaversery of the battle of the Coral Sea. I got to spend four days each in Hobart, Adelade, and Melbourne. then one day in Brisbane as we left. Wonderful place to visit. Very friendly folks.
