Chipped my Truck

Banks released tuners for the 2016's.

I put the economy tune in my truck tonight, will give it some testing, says good to 6000 pounds towing, so that handles my boat. I will load default back in if pulling my 14K trailer. It scared the crap out of me, all my alarms went off, odometer went to zero and radio showed reset when I first plugged it in. I then thought through the fact that reading the settings would no clear anything and determined that it isolated the computer while talking to it, all good now.

Just an FYI if a Duramax truck, the CVN (Calibration Verification Number) changes everytime the PCM is flashed. If the truck has an engine related warranty issue, GM wants to see the CVN number, if they don't match the last known numbers in TIS, powertrain warranty is void. This is why a lot of tuner guys buy a second PCM to play and keep the original untouched. GM has been doing this for about 12 years. They also do it for gas trucks and cars. PCMs also have a finite flash life.

Fords do some crazy stuff when you do a TPMS relearn with a TPMS tool hooked into the OBD diagnostic link it scares me big time... Windows roll down, sunroof opens up dome light stays on till you drive it some... All kinds of bells go off

So, you figure that some third party outfit is smarter than $50,000,000 worth of engineering talent?

Something to think about...
Every manufacturer has to please THREE groups of people to get a vehicle to market. First, it has to pass muster with the EPA. Emissions have to comply with current standards for the model year. Next comes CARB. They also have to satisfy economy standards in place for the type of vehicle and the model year. Then, after all of that, they have to please the customer. Does the performance measure up to the competition? Do they meet stated specifications? Have they met their production goals?

So, after all of that, a couple of kids in a garage come along and think that they can make it go faster. Or get better fuel mileage. Or make a little extra torque. Fine. In doing that, they also upset the other factors like emissions and fuel economy in particular. Yep, they sure are smarter than the folks that designed and built that vehicle. NOT!!!

If you wanted more power, you should have bought that in the first place. Same goes for fuel mileage and speed performance.

What you have done is most likely not illegal, but the manufacturer would not have been able to market that vehicle as it stands now. It most likely would not have met all of the standards that it was put up against. But, since it is your truck, you can do as you please with it. So much for cleaner air.

lot of critical words & speculation.....how do you know that it pollutes more now? Are you sure it doesn't pollute less?

Edge programmers do not eliminate any emmissions components on the truck, so it really should not pollute more than normal. Which also is the reason edge does not sell as many programmers as they used to. If your truck is a diesel, EFI live with emissions delete tuning would give much more performance and economy gains. This is speaking from experience on my 2013 Duramax. 30 horse improved stock is much more responsive. I have not been brave enough to try the 200 horse over tune yet.
