Lawn Mower Engine

I have an old lawn mower I bought at JC Penny about 42 years ago,it has a 4 HP Briggs engine and it is plumb wore out, smokes a lot and uses a lot of oil.I just bought a new engine for it so was wondering how long it would last with no oil.I drained it then started it up just to see how long it would run I set it wide open and it ran for 10 minutes till it got so hot and seized up and quit.About an hour later I pulled the rope and it broke loose so this morning I thought why not,I put oil in it and it started right up and ran like it always did except no smoke.I never saw anything so tough in my life I almost feel sorry for it now.I think I'll mount it on my shop wall.

You got the old one when cast iron was the block material. I still have an old Troy rear tine tiller flathead single with that cast iron block..non running and not worth putting any money in it. Try that with a non iron liner alum and the alum will gum up and stop the works in short order....will not recover. Happens in 2 stroke outboard motors fairly frequently.

Hello MT RON,

If you have the old style breather, here is a picture of it I found. Look at the holes that have to be open. Fiber disk valve clearance should not exceed .045. Do not force the wire gauge to check that clearance as it will warp the fiber disk. If you have a tube type vent system, make sure is attached and the tube in not cracked. It goes into the air cleaner to prevent dirt getting into the engine. A clogged air cleaner will make it burn oil, as well as an overfilled engine,
