Top radiator hose sucks in

I have to Ford 4600 tractors that I just bought. Today I was
working on one and fix the radiator leak. I was running it for a
while to see if it would warm up and I noticed the top radiator
hose sucked in. I assume the thermostat opened up and that's
what caused the top hose to suck in. Just anyone know why this
happened? I thought maybe the top hose was supposed to have a
steel coil in it but I checked the other Ford 4600 and it
doesn't. Does anyone have any idea why it did that, I'm kind of
in a hurry to get this tractor going and don't need any
problems.

Make sure the radiator cap atmospheric valve is not stuck shut. It is the lowest point on the cap. it looks like a disk and has a very weak spring holding it closed. If its kind of glued shut it will allow suction to pull in hoses. The hose might be weak and excessively soft as well. Jim

I've seen hoses do that.

My theory is the thermostat is a restriction to the flow, whether open or closed. The pump is moving coolant under pressure through the block, the flow hits the thermostat restriction, resulting in low pressure on the hoses, which are on the suction side of the pump.

If the hoses are in good condition, it should not cause any problems. Once the system builds some pressure they will open up.

If the hose is mushy feeling, soft, it may be damaged by oil. Might check the cooling system for oil contamination. Oil will soften and deteriorate rubber, exposed from the inside or out.

I have gotten to the point of installing springs from old radiator hoses into the new ones. If your desperate as I have been in the past, you can buy yourself a new lower hose from what ever application and use that spring in a new upper hose for your rig.

After reading each post, I would suggest switching the caps between each tractor and check what changes may take place.
