Singer's personal rendition of national anthems, etc.

I watched the first game of the NHL Stanley Cup finals last night from Las Vegas, the singer with the Star Spangled Banner did a nice job before the game. After the first period though, Gladys Knight (without the Pips) did her own version of God Bless America as part of the recognition of Memorial Day. No issues with Gladys but she did her own Bluesy, Jazzy, or whatever you want to call it rendition to that beautiful song and I had to switch channels, it really was hard to take, at least in my opinion. Not the first time I've seen that happen, quite often actually with the national anthems of the American and/or Canadian national anthems. Not sure why the organizers allow that, and maybe a lot of people enjoy those different ways of singing the anthems, but it sure doesn't work for me. Sing it like it was written is the way I prefer it, others might feel differently. All I know is that I'll take Kate Smith any day of the week.

I know what you mean...

How the selection is made is baffling to me! And just imagine what some of the so called "professional singers" are paid!

It seems to have settled down a little in the last few years, but there for a while it was anything goes. Some very irreverent and disrespectful actions by some who use the position for their agenda.

Holy smokes, I think I've seen some bad ones, that is definitely treason against the country. Never saw anything nearly that bad. Surely the organizers must know that ahead of time.

I agree with your sentiment. Sing it as it's written. Could not make it through the Fergie rendition below, it's a travesty. National Anthem was not intended to be stylized. I'm reminded of a comic strip character (Ed Crankshaft) who recounted going to a baseball game the night before and having to listen to a singer "yodel" the National Anthem.

Gee, has everyone forgotten Rosanne Barr already??

Just do a search on Youtube, "[i:34bf9484a2]worst ever National Anthem[/i:34bf9484a2]". There's more horrible renditions of disaster than you can shake a stick at!

Question -- Who the H*&L IS IT that hires these people? Is it the stadium owners? The team owners? Names chosen at random? Maybe at gunpoint? WHAT??

I started to reply earlier, but then remembered that there are lots of people out there who like to change things up; make it different; make it their own. Thing is, this is "supposed" to be our National Anthem, and it's supposed to represent us as a people and a nation.

The only one conclusion I can draw from all of these......"failures" is that these are people asked to sing our Anthem who don't even know what the words mean....and likely also do not care!

I've sung it for some ballgames, military retirements, car races, etc.- I always do it EXACTLY as traditionally written. Watched the Fergie version below- folks should have started booing and walking out after the second line. IMHO.

Little off the topic of how anthem is sung, but I believe it was at a high school tournament the other day. National anthem was sung before first game but was announced they would not sing it before the second game. The crowd stood up and sang it.

LUCKY!

Hmmm, you're a bit grumpy today Bob, spending too much time staring at your computer screen maybe? Using your words ...... "Shut the damned thing off." Take a pill and relax a bit, you're stressing more than I am by the sounds of your reply.

It's called artistic license. They can do it their way. Thing is that some should have that license revoked!

i completely agree that some so called "entertainers" are allowed to put their own personal spin on how a song is sung. i don't like it when they put too much soul into it. Sing it the way it was intended IMHO. Otherwise take a hike and go where your style of singing is appreciated.

I do not hear Kate Smith mentioned very often, but I agree! She did several of the old patriotic songs, and in my estimation she set the standard!!
