Hello folks,
Hoping that someone on this site can help identify the year and model of this farmall tractor. This picture is of my grandfather on his farm in Victoria BC. The photo was taken in 1948 and the tractor was not purchased new and as you can see by the picture below it does show some signs of age. any help in identifying the year and model as well as the pto side mower would be appreciated. My goal is to track one of these machines down for purchase. thanks in advance Russ

There is no question the tractor is a International ?
A? model. The mower, probably a IH mower as well.
Easy enough to find yourself a IH ?A? tractor if you
want one. I would recommend you try to find a ?
Super A? rather than just the earlier ?A? model. The
Super A , comes with hydraulic lift, and makes using
mounted equipment much easier. Finding that
mower, could be a real challenge.

Tractor will be easy to find, getting a working exhaust lift to be 'just like' that tractor would be a hard part. That lift ended up not being very
dependable, the hot exhaust wore them out pretty fast so there aren't good old ones laying around, and so finding a working unit will be a
challenge. Thry are out there, but just saying.

Good luck on the quest. :)

Nice picture. The Farmall A was my dad's introduction to power farming. He held that model in high esteem. Shouldn't be too hard to find a nice one. unc

Now you guys are pretty sharp. All the A s I remember with EXHAUST lift were vertical up by the radiator , but some one mentioned vacuum lift and it appears that the cylinder on this one was laying down. Was their in fact a vacuum exhaust. About all I remember is either one was just about worthless. Dad sure was glad to see the supper A come out for sure.

Never heard of a vacuum lift on one. It would be very slow for no more vacuum than an A provided.

The exhaust lift cylinder was moved to different locations depending n your implement. I think the main problem with them was they required a lot of maintenance that was very seldom done.

In my area an A was non existant, just not sold here because it was a one row machine, very few B or BN as well, tractors of that size were other makes. Now the F series and rest of letter series were popular. I would not have a slightest idea where to go to find a A Farmall in a colection or otherwise. So where it is said they were very popular and now still easy to find where are they or where were they? The only other tractor of that style was the AC B and very few of them, mostly the C. The Deere M was not made till later and when the MT came outmost were that and not the single row tractor.

The steering wheel says it is a late '40 Farmall A through the end of the model run which was '47. The decals appear to say McCormic Deering Farmall which should narrow it down to late '40 through '44. It has a generator, battery and the switch box but the headlights look like they are silver which is odd as from what I know the add on lights came black. It also has an adjustable front axle, front weights and the plow lift lever. Rear tires are original to the machine by the tread pattern.

The above is only my opinion.
