Anybody tried the Blue Devil rear main sealer? The little IH
Cub that I bought Saturday has a rear main leak , thought I
might try some of this snake oil before I break the little tractor
apart. I know some folks that have used the Blue Devil
products for leaking head gaskets and they swear by the stuff.

Never tried it. I've had the best luck with Lucas products, but they don't always work either. I don't remember the name of the last stuff I bought, but it was in a counter display at the auto parts store. Counterman said people who were buying it loved it. I bought two bottles to put in the transfer case on the FWA tractor because the label said if one didn't work, use a second one. The first one almost had it stopped,so I put the second one in. I might as well have taken the torch and burned the seal right out of it. No sooner had I put the second bottle in and the oil started running out in a stream. When I took it apart to put the new seal in,the old one was melted right to the shaft. I had to clean the mess of burned rubber off with a wire wheel.

If it has a rubber/neoprene seal, it might help.

If rope, I doubt it will.

Something you might try, keep a close watch on the oil level and let it drop down to the add line, see if it will slow.

I've had several engines that would dump oil out the rear seal if run on the full line. Let it leak down and it would all but stop. Forklift at work has a Continental engine, been running like that for 20+ years!

I'm with Steve on this one. Anything is worth a shot. Wife drove across a hay field and then went home. Came home later from same field and followed an oil slick from the field to where her truck was parked. Pinion seal leaking and about whooped my tail changing it. Had to grind a socket down to get the nut off of the companion flange and then use a large puller to take the companion flange off. Told her next time she gets to change it. Good luck.

beware, I put some seal restorer in a automatic transmission worked perfect and still is working, used the same stuff in a front differential for a leaking pinion seal done good for about 30 days then it went south when I removed the old seal it was swelled out of shape and extremely soft

I would give it a shot. If it works great. If not you get to split the cub. I know a fellow used it in a dirt track car. It lasted several races.

Mr. Grayrider, I think you are going to find an aluminum seal carrier bolted to the block with a rubber seal i it. The hole in the seal carrier is oversize or the seal is undersize. I don't know which it is, but the result is the same either way. The seal Installed came in a IH marked package and it did;t fit any better than the one I removed. I cut a piece of shim stock the right length to wrap around the seal and RTVed it into the seal carrier. That worked for me. There are better ways to fix this problem but I did not have them available to me.

I know exactly what your talking about, I just can?t imagine why there is not a replacement rear main seal of the proper size made for the Cubs. May try a bottle of Blue Devil before tearing it down, leak not too bad at the moment but don?t like seeing a drip on the mower deck
