Linn truck with Gradall

Saw this last night on another site and thought I'd share. A video on You Tube titled First Linn Gradall startup in 50 years tells some of the story. This Linn truck came from the nearby town of Franklin N.Y. and truck was built in Morris N.Y. As a boy my neighbor told how this exact truck cleared the roads with drifts higher than the truck. Pretty neat how small the world is at times.

Greg, you must have heard of Roy Bilby right next door to you in Richmondville?
He had 11 or 12 Linn tractors at one time.....he restored one and it pops up at tractor shows now and again.
He has a bunch of you-tube videos of the restoration including the rebuilding of the engine.

db4600, Nice! From what little information on Linn tractor trucks only about 2500 were made. What's amazing is they are all over the world! If you go to the Coachbuilt site is gives a detailed history of the Linn tractor trailer company.

Brian, I haven't seen those video's yet so thanks for posting. I have only been in the Worcester area for 20 years and before that lived and farmed in Treadwell. That truck most likely cleared the road in front of our farm back in the 30's.

Have seen two of those amazing beasts. One of my dads friends had one and another shows up at the Rough and Tumble steam show this comming week in Kinzer, PA. Put a Tiger Tank to shame. The ones I have seen were both Hunter Green.

That's a great read on the Linn trucks & tractor! H. H. Linn probably built & owned one of the 1st motor homes, according to the info on the site. Never knew that such a manufacturing facility existed in Morris.
My grandfather, Charles Carpenter,, lived in Morris most of his life and is buried in the cemetery over looking the fairgrounds. He owned a farm and ran a mercantile store in town. My father, G. Dean Carpenter, was born there in 1914 and graduated from MHS as valedictorian of his class at the age of 16.

dcarp, Did you read how he built a hydroelectric plant to power his building and the town? Pretty impressive for the time. Isn't a Linn tractor at the fairgrounds? I haven't been to the Otsego County fair in years but I know I saw a Linn somewhere! Don't forget Morris is home to Dr. Naylor's!

Sullivan county had several Linn's left from plowing the roads. (My mom remembers them plowing) Some years ago a county employee started a campaign to restore one. They ended up trading a couple for parts to get the one restored. The county brings it to our local tractor show every year.

sms, I see they rescued one Linn tractor from Hunter Mt. The Slutsky's used for pulling cable. My wife worked there as a teenager 30 years ago.

I see you grew up in Treadwell, I knew a girl there back in the late 70s. I also knew the Slutsky's a little from when they rebuilt bridges on Route 17 here. We stopped at the same ginmill at times.

dcarp, I read that was the largest overshot wheel on the east coast. Funny you mentioned Elon, my son just met him when he bought his new car. My younger son likes 5.9's and diesel smoke. Same mother! lol

I remember but would never post it. We all deserve some privacy these days. They lived on 14.
I remember one of Slutsky's men, Louis, was head of ticket sales, I got to ski free a couple times that winter. 1980 I believe.

I hope he wouldn't be another Elon Musk. He seemed to be the real deal and Elon is just all hat with no cowboy!!!!!!

I've got one of those smoky 5.9's with a Edge on it. Fuel costs too much to do it for fun but it sure will pull the trailer with the equipment on it. SWMBO wants to buy a hybrid so we might be diesel & electric also.

Greg, hopeing to see you and SMS and other at Roseboom tractor show this coming weekend for a YT roundup.
The town of Springfield had a Lynn tractor for years. It had a Hercules big 6 in it with straight pipe straight up out of the hood. Had a V plow on front and double wings. There was a wooden enclosure with a wood stove in it behind the cab for the wing men to control the wings. They were manual lift with big hand wheels like on graders of that time. I am not sure how the V blade was lifted. They ran it into the 60s when we got big storms. Eventually the Walters took over. They still have one of them that still sees some "winging back" duty. It also has a big Herc in it.
I can still remember them bucking snow drifts with both the Lynn and the Walters.
The Lynn was slow, but had lots of power and traction. They had to be careful not to push too far into drifts that came over the V blade as they could get wedged in and could not be able to back out.
The Walters were faster, and could really throw some snow when bucking deep drifts, but they were prone to twisting of front axles if you did not dump the clutch in time.
This was back before the town cut all the trees and removed stumps, and all the stone walls that lined both side of town roads.
The Federal Erwin plan gave money to local townships to improve their roads, and now the snow doesn't fill them 15' deep with snow in the winter.
The last I knew there was also a Lynn with dump box like pictured on this thread. It was owned by Montgomery County Hwy Dept. They always displayed it at the Fonda fair, and would do an exhibition pull on Tractor Pull night. It had a 220 Cummins and had no problem making the 300' mark with front tires proudly in the air.
The fellow who drove it when new and most of it's life, died, and I'm not sure where it is now.

Probably 30+ years ago I knew of a farm between route 17 and the Cannonsville reservoir that had a couple halftracks parked out back. They looked like newer Linn's. When I went back looking for them they gone. A couple pictures from our tractor show a few years ago.

sms, We had to stuff the V plow on our newest truck this year! That truck is gutless it was designed for plowing state roads not up in the hills. Nice Linn truck!
